Negativity will get you nowhere
Nobody likes this list but me. Those who dislike it the most apparently haven't read most of the books or are afraid to try. If it were a video game it would be a challenge, but literature! What's wrong with doing a little mental work for your pleasure? [grumble.... grumble... grumble....]
I recommend The Tale of Two Cities from the first list. A little romance, yes, but lots of political conflict and a bangup ending.
I recommend The Handmaid's Tale from the second list. Religious right brings dystopia to America. Results: conflict and sex.
