hey everyone,

I'm trying to find a book that I read a long time ago. I recall doing a book report on this back in grade 6 (circa 1986).

It was a book about a grade 5 class that, through their classroom computer, crosses paths with someone from a 2D universe. There were pictures illustrating the 2D universe. they had arms and legs sort of like us and a very long neck with eyes on the top and a mouth in between that they would swivel from side to side to see where they were going.

The kids had an interesting discussion with Mr. 2D about pipes. When they ate they would swallow food into a stomach sack and spit up the food that could not be digested. He had a hard time understanding how pipes worked as in his world things would simply fall into two halves.

he took them to a cross walk where people going in one direction would walk under the people going in the other direction.

he took them to an art gallery where the art (that looked like a line of dots) was hung on the ceiling. ...I never quite understood how the ceilings were held up. doors were flaps that hinged at the top.

At the end of the book our 2D friend transcends his 2D universe and is able to transport himself along a 3D axis to look in on his 2D world. mind blowing stuff.

I recall the cover was black with green lettering in that pixel-y "computer font" that was so hip in the 80s.

if anyone knows the title and author of this book, I would love to find it again.

Thanks!

Thanks. It's definitely not Flatland. in my online searches Flatland is as close as I've been able to come, but sadly this is not it.

oh oh oh!!

I found it!! just had to add the word "alien" to my google search! This has been bugging me for years.

it's The Planiverse: Computer Contact with a Two-Dimensional World by AK Dewdney

Thanks!!!
