I have been searching for this for a while and no-one seems to be able to help. I'm hoping at least one of you could?

When my daughter was in primary school (year 4), her class breifly studied the Ancient Egyptains. She got very into it, and I am also intersted in them.

Her class read a (fictional) book.

She doesn't remember much about it, as this was around 7 or 8 years ago. But she's interested in reading the book again. I would also like to read it, as it wasn't just a childrens' book.

All she seems to remember is there was a boy and a talking mummified cat. We think the cat may have been called Kahn or Khan, something along them lines. And the boy either found a mummified cat in Egypt and they went back in time to Ancient Egypt and the cat was showing the boy around. Or maybe the boy found the mummified cat in modern Egypt and the cat told him tales about what Ancient Egypt was like. That's all we know. Something about time-travelling, a boy and a cat.

Could anyone please help? We've tried various search engines and asked in many book stores, nobody seems to know.

Time Cat, by Lloyd Alexander, maybe?

"Inspired by his cat's ability to appear and disappear without his noticing it, Lloyd Alexander crafted a magical fantasy about Jason and his black cat Gareth. Gareth tells Jason that cats do not actually have nine lives, but nine trips. They can go live different lives in different places, and they are allowed to bring a friend. Jason and Gareth go to Egypt in 2700 B.C.E., to Italy in 1468 (where they meet, hang out with and inspire Leonardo da Vinci), to witch hunts in 1600's Germany and to a last stop in 1775 America."

I don't know how it is over there, but here in the states, a children's reference librarian can be an invaluable resource in locating a book on little information. I so love the librarians! It doesn't always work, but since you didn't mention them as a source, thought you could use the idea. Good luck!

Might check the books listed on this page.

These all mention a cat.
Pawprints in Time
Khufu the Wonder Cat
The Curse of the Cat Mummy

This is a popular homeschooling topic- there may be other lists like this out there...

Looking on the Bookstumpers website... a couple more possibilities.

Stolz, Mary - Cat in the Mirror
Time Travelling Cat and the Egyptian Goddess (didn't say author)
