I work for an ambulance service. I work as both an EMT and a Dispatcher. Tonight I am in Dispatch. I'm not allowed to sleep when I'm dispatching, so I usually read and rove around on the internet. I work nine nights (11P-7A) in a row, the last shift being sixteen hours (3P-7A) long. The last shift starts at 3P on Tuesday (today), so I'm looking forward to a nice long five day weekend (which I have every other week).

is it hard to work always at night? do you like it?
i love the night.

Years ago when I worked nights (11pm - 7am), I didn't mind the shift so much as the feeling of being out of sync with everything during the day.

After a long stretch of workdays, the longer days off are nice, though. :)

I do like it. The whole thing started because my boyfriend graduated college a year before me. We both became EMTs in college and wanted to work in that field. I've always been a stay up late and sleep late kind of girl. When he started working overnights I just kind of adjusted to his schedule. After I graduated I wasn't able to work at night right away. I worked a variety of different day shifts and it was SO hard. I'd want to stay up late with Tom on his nights off and would end up getting to work late because I couldn't drag my ass out of bed.

Now, we both work at night, some nights we are even partners. Our whole life is shifted toward sleeping all day, even the dog sleeps late now. Try getting her out of bed in the morning and it's a horror show. We work the same days and have the same days off, so Wednesday we will shift to sleeping at night for our five days off.

that is great, just the way it should be. Yeah dogs become their owners in a strange and kinda freaky way.

Yea, she's like a little person. She fits in perfectly with us. She visited with my Mom while we were on vacation and she gave my mom such a hard time because my mom goes to bed around 10 or 11 and gets up early at 6.

We were at my softball game the other day and she was so funny. The team is made up of cops, firefighters and EMTs. She sat on the bench in between Tom and somebody else so she could watch, but she ended up being the big attraction there. All of my co-workers know her and love to see her. We were next to the hospital, so the ambulances were driving by us to see how bad we were losing whenever they weren't busy. Everytime she heard a diesel engine she perked up and if it was an ambulance or firetruck she got all excited because those are Dad & Mom's "cars".

sounds very cute, how bad did you lose?
25 to 7. Not nearly our worst. Our first game was 44-10, and we lost to a bunch of hairdressers. We're horrible, it's shocking to see how unathletic public safety personnel are.

I don't know. Their team wasn't very nice and the team's captain has a legal issue with one of the cops on our team, so we didn't exactly socialize. I'm sure there were a lot of hairdresser family members on the team.

mehastings - I don't envy you your overnighters! I was a third shifter for about 6 months and had trouble adjusting.

Now I do the normal, boring 7:30am - 4:30pm. Civilised!

I did, however, work second shift once and thought that was great but it's not condusive to having fun with your friends who work 1st.

kinda dumb to get into a legal argument with a cop and then play ball against him, that must suck, i feel ALMOST sorry for that fellow (sp?). :D
