I'm just writing to introduce myself - I've been lurking for a while and trying to find my way round the site!

I come from Yorkshire in the UK and love to read (obviously!). I like all kinds of genre from thrillers to horrors to historical to contemporary to classics to even some chick-lit! I also like reading debut books.

Hi, Dollydaydreamer! (Does liking to read "debut books" mean what I think it does, books by never-before-published writers? Or is it a genre I don't know about?)

Welcome to the forum, Dollydaydreamer, from a fellow Yorkshire person! :) Your name made me laugh - my mum used to sometimes call me that when I was engrossed in a book and didn't hear what she said. Do you think it's a purely Yorkshire saying?

Hello Dollydaydreamer (not an expression I've heard before!). Welcome to TBF! :)

I am also assuming you mean 'debut' books to mean an author's first publication. Is this because you like discovering new authors? Or do you enjoy reading the first novels of established well-known authors? Or a bit of both? It's something I haven't really thought about before.

Hi

Thanks for the welcome.

A debut novel is a book which has been written by a first-time author - I like to give anyone a chance because I'd like to have a go a writing a book myself one day if I get brave enough!!

Dollydaydreamer is a name my mother used to call me when I was a little girl! I don't know whether it's a Yorkshire expression because my parents came from London (I was born up north)!! Even now I still don't know which planet I'm on - I'm always in a world of my own! Best way to be sometimes, I think! Especially when I'm reading books. Love them!!:D

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell

I'm planning to read this book next. I notice Halo and Kookamoor are reading it - can you recommend it? It's such a chunky book, I'd like to know if it's worth my while.

I've been reading it for a while and am just over half way now. I found it difficult to get into, largely because the style is different (with the footnotes, etc) and the pacing is slower than what I usually expect for a fantasy-genre book. It's great for a relaxing afternoon read, though. I just found that it couldn't be 'whizzed' through - which is probably a good thing, really. It is pretty chunky, though. I'd say that if you like what you see in the first few pages in the bookstore, consider buying it if you can spare the money. It's a really lovely story and you may want to read it over a longer period of time than, say, a library book.
