Holiday advice

Eggnog

I like the eggnog latte at Starbucks.

Holiday advice: please be patient/kind/forgiving with retail employees. Most of us are trying our best. You're overwhelmed with shopping, we're overwhelmed with trying to help all of you as fast as possible.

I've been having some excellent customers lately (nice, sweet, grateful). They certainly make up for all the bad ones and make me happy to be working in retail. It puts me in a good mood and makes me a better employee.

Aww, I didn't know people were mean to the retail people in the holiday season.
I usually find that people are nicer to me than usual around Christmas and I get less comments about me having to stop delivering mail from the tax people or whatever.
 
Is eggnog advocaat? If so, I've tried it. If not, er, I haven't.

I discovered last Christmas that I like sherry. My grandmother spent a ridiculous amount of money on a hamper containing various items that went in the bin at various times in the weeks afterwards, and among the marmalade and balsamic vinegar and champagne (seriously!) was a bottle of sherry. It was lovely, although I only had one small glass out of the bottle and the rest went in the bin because nobody else liked it.

I don't work in retail but I feel bad that people are rude to retail staff.

My tip, I suppose: if you're sending cards abroad, get them written and sent off early. I guess that's a tip for myself, since they're still not written out.
 
Eggnog is kinda like advocaat except it's typically sold in the store non-alcoholic and we add the liquor to it at home. I like to add rum to mine.

A lot of customers are usually grumpy and high strung. The lines are long which makes shopping on their lunch breaks more tense. It's those last couple of days before Christmas when they're at their worst. They're tired and frustrated and not very pleasant when checking out. During this time, they outnumber us by a lot. I understand the frustration, but I don't like it when they take it out on us.

But there are definitely really sweet awesome customers. And I love them so much. I really do love my job.
 
Gift Receipts

Holiday advice: Please request gift receipts and give them to the recipient along with the gift. Please.

I'm tellin' ya, there are all kinds of people!
If you're my customer, I will love you and treat you as if you're family. I will be patient, I will smile the whole time I'm with you, and I will do my best to make sure you get what you need. But man, some people... they don't see that happening or they don't give me a chance to make it happen.

Our check out line is one of those single lines. You have to wait at a sign and then you go to the next available cashier... But some people don't see that we have a line and they'll just walk right up to your register, unknowingly cutting in front of many others. Sometimes, I don't notice 'til afterwards so some will get away with it... But this one time, I saw this woman and her kids walk up to the front of the line and when I was done with this one guy, this old lady comes up. I smiled and said kindly, "Oh ma'am, I'm so sorry, but that woman over there was next."
The old lady was like, "well how was I supposed to know?! She's all the way over there!!!" And she throws her books down on the counter at me, hard so that they slide across and hit me. It happens.

I still love my job.
