...one gift that I'm making myself... a game board... I will work on this weekend when I can get my hands on a drill press.
Cribbage? Tell me it's cribbage...

Nope, he's lousy at cribbage. We used to play a lot until I got sick of winning. It's a game we play at work that we call Tuck. It's a really viscious board game involving a lot of strategy. I couldn't think of how to describe it, so I looked it up online. It would seem it is actually called Tock, and is popular in Canada. Now I'm thinking I might just buy one of the boards pictured instead of spending hours making two of them out of plywood.

Well our Thanksgiving plans have finally been made. We are taking off Tuesday of that week after daughter gets out of school and going to our cabin at the lake and staying out there til Saturday. My husbands parents have a cabin out there too so I guess they will be out there and we are going to have turkey at one of the cabins :D
So I will disappear for a few days as I do not have internet access out to the cabin. Hubby wont get it for me either :(

Sometimes we think about going someplace totally isolated for Christmas..well away from all the "gotta's" associated with extended family members. There's times the Alaskan bush sounds really, really inviting!

I plan to spend Christmas day alone, as I have for many years now. I'll be supping wine, eating, and reading.

I've only spent one Christmas Day alone, and I wasn't actually alone then. My mom was in the hospital in the hospital, my dh had to work, and I was home with my firstborn, who was just a few weeks old. I didn't want to go out to my uncle's and listen to my cousins gloating about how great the holiday was, and why wasn't I spending more time with my mom? (I was just there on Christmas Eve for the same treatment) and I couldn't take the baby up to medical ICU where my mom was..so I stayed home alone.

I'm not sure what's in store for Christmas yet. Dh has to work Thanksgiving Day, and perhaps the whole weekend. I'm not sure what to do about dinner. We've been talking about doing something other than the traditional turkey dinner, since most of the family aren't fond of turkey anyway. Dh and several of the kids are cool with Kung Pao Chicken instead, but one of the picky ones just informed me they'd rather have turkey...I thought about just getting a turkey breast for the picky people. My mil usually comes over, but with the work schedule problem, I don't know how things are going to happen. She doesn't want to drive after dark, and one of the older girls just informed me that she has to work until 8pm that night. I may just have the meal in the evening, and have somebody drive Grandma home.
How about a ham instead of turkey?

Tock resembles Parcheesi, but with cards instead of dice.

I think my hubby has his mouth set for Kung Pao Chicken;) He loves it and was the one to suggest doing something different. He actually suggested Chimichangas, which I've never made. At least I have Kung Pao down pat. Most everyone here loves it too, the main naysayer is the one who would have to clean the wok. She always complains that I wait til her dish week to decide to make this:rolleyes: I don't know what she's complaining about, a traditional turkey dinner would mean a lot more mess. Even my mil loves Kung pao chicken..

In regards to christmas shopping, we buy presents throughout the year whenever we go shopping, much easier on the family budget that way. We will visit my brother in law in Kansas(and drive through mom2kngr's neck of the woods:D ) for thanksgiving. For christmas, we are flying to Chicago to see my sister three nephews, one of whom is currently in the Army's military intelligence program. He'll be on leave during that week and it will be great to see him.

Our Thanksgiving dinner menu:

Roast turkey w/ cornbread stuffing
Honey spiral sliced ham
Mashed potatoes
Sweet potatoes w/ marshallow and pineapple
Corn pudding.....my specialty and reguested by grandaughter
Peas
Cranberry sauce
Pumpkin pie
Apple pie....made from fresh apples
LaBrea french rolls
Wine

Guess we will celebrate our wedding anniversary on another day. :)

My 4th christmas away in 5 years. Last year I was home for the first time since 2000, and it was great. Unfortunately I couldn't get the thesis done in time to head home for christmas, but I'll be back for Australia Day (Jan 26th).

I was trying to get all my gifts bought in time to ship them to Oz, but it seems they will have to be going via expensive airmail. I'm buying my brother's online in Australia to cut down on that. Mum and Dad's have to come from here, though, so I'm hoping they're not too heavy or it gets expensive *very* quickly.

At this stage I'm spending christmas at my boyfriend's parents place, so that requires some extra gift buying thought... I'm thinking I might bake something this year just to cut down on the idea of materialism... oh, and cost!

My in-laws have already got me cooking for parts of thanksgiving. That is what I get for being a show-off the first few times I cook for people. Now they seem to think I am a kitchen god.

Kook, I have been thinking about doing food gifts this year as well. Just buying some Mason Jars and putting all the dry ingredients for certain recipes in them. Plopping a ribbon on the top and voila!

I'm not much of an alone type person, but this Christmas I envy you. I'll be at my LOVELY job for the majority of the holiday. I go in at 3PM on Christmas Eve until 7AM on Christmas. Then, I go back in at 3PM on Christmas until 7AM on the 26th. It'll be tiring and long, but the BF will be there for most of it, and the money they'll give me is well worth it. We can get a free meal from the hospital, but we'll probably cook a ham here instead.

My hubby's cousin is hosting Thanksgiving again this year, so I will be there with my in-laws. Not bad, I get along with them pretty well. Although I've just discovered that thinking about Thanksgiving makes me miss my dad :( The kids are really excited about Christmas this year, hubby will not be working Christmas Day for a change. For most of their young lives, we've had to ask Santa to come early or late so Daddy could be there, too. New Years will probably be spent at one of my sisters' houses eating and watching football.
