I am looking for some decent horror books, I have read some Stephen king and enjoy his books. If anybody has some good ideas let me know what you guys think

Dead of Night by Jonathan Maberry is pretty incredible. I wrote a review that you can read here if you want. It does a good job of being legitimately scary.

I've been known to enjoy the odd horror novel. You can check reviews and my blog via link in my signature.

Authors of note from past few years that I think worthy of mention include Brit Adam Nevill (suggest Banquet for the Damned or Apartment 16 to start) for supernatural excellence, Justin Cronin's The Passage for some epic King style handling of the apocalyptic horror strands, whilst Joe Hill is also popular. Gary McMahon, Adam Baker, Tom Fletcher are other authors of note whose works have impressed me a fair amount. For the more surreal I'd suggest checking out Steve Rasnic Tem, Chuck Wendig and some of the smaller U.S. indies are producing some interesting work indeed. King is a classic, a legend, no doubt. But along with the quality stuff (The Shining/Salems' Lot) there's some questionable quality (Bag of Bones). Possibly, if you want to check out more King then his Dark Tower series is great stuff indeed.

My only concern about the state of horror is that it seems to be one of the most popular genres for the self-pub authors to target which can make it really difficult to filter through works for the quality stuff. When it comes to horror I really do stick to the more known horror publishers and editors who I can trust for quality, editorial and otherwise. I am too busy with other life stuff to sort through the lacklustre and mediocre that seems to appear on an hourly basis...

I sincerely hope so too. Especially since I spent way too much on it and, for the first time in the 16 years we've been together, didn't tell my better half about my purchase. I know he'll understand and, hopefully see it as an investment, but he's going to flip when he finds out how much it was. I can see it already, "You paid how much? For a book?"

I've been there... quite often :lol: I am generally able to exercise a little control with limited editions, but it's those first editions that cross one's path that cause the real problem on those rare occasions that they cross my path... Arkham House :

Well, I have been attempting to collect all of Stephen King's works in hardback limited edition or first edition. As you can imagine, that is not only a large collection, but a costly one. He will understand because other than Shakespeare and Poe, I have some self-restraint that will allow me to be satisfied with digital or paperback form of books I intend to simply devour.

I recently discovered and love Blake Crouch (just started a thread actually :> ). I would start with Run and then maybe Abandon. There's plenty more if you like those...Loved the Desert Places Trilogy. Wouldn't start with Serial uncut though, might scare you off...seriously.
Those are all the ones I read so far but have about 5 more I'm eager to get started on!

Um... Yep, I'd start with Run then try the Desert Places Trilogy or Abandon. . Hope you enjoy as much as I did!

I thought "The Ruins" by Scott smith makes for a good read. I just finished Joe Hill's new book "no64a2" and while it wasn't his best to date, it's better than most and it didn't drag.

I bought that version of "it" for my brother, I haven't gotten around to reading it, but from what I've seen (the size, slip cover, and artwork) if you are a collector or just really love that book then it's money well spent.

"House" by Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker was a pretty good horror novel. I enjoyed it. It's also made into a movie, but I haven't seen it. Ted Dekker's "Thr3e" and "Skin" are also really good (though "Skin" is best if you read his other books).

F. Paul Wilson's The Keep is a favorite of mine.
Peter Straub gets kind of surreal but his stuff is good too (Ghost Story or Julia would be good places to start with his work); ditto Clive Barker (I'd recommend Books of Blood, Coldheart Canyon, The Damnation Game) .
