Horse Racing: Animal abuse or innocent sport.

No equivocating. Pick one of those two sides and make an argument.

Horses seem to be getting hurt more often in this sport. Should it be better regulated? Are any changes necessary?

If you are like me when it comes to horse racing you can take it or leave it and if this is the case SIT OUT on this one (unless you can make me laugh). I want uncompromising positions only. This is an experiment.

I have no problem with horse racing in theory but I also believe that the horses being pushed harder and harder every year while at the same time the training isn't necessarily improving at the same rate and I don't like that.

I don't know anything about horse breeding programs and I wonder if selective breeding is part of the problem.

All that being said, I'll go with innocent sport.

I have no problem with horse racing. I used to go to the track when I was a kid and can remember having a lot of fun. My uncle used to be a jockey and later worked at the track as a cashier.

I say this knowing that in Canada we have a lot of rules regarding the humane treatment of animals. I’d have a different point of view if the horses were kept in inhumane conditions.

Ive always thought it was pretty fucked. Most of these horses arent considered pets. They are just alive to make money, and once their time is up they get a bolt shot in their head. And then are sold for meat. Many times they are whipped so hard that they are left with cuts. That turn infected, causing severe nerve damage, and some times result in the animals death. Not counting the ones that actually die on the spot from a injury.

I think horse racing is ok as long as they only use criminal horses. The ungulate criminal justice system in this country is an absolute joke and has been ever since they banned flogging dead horses as an example to others.

Could I get some clarification on the bolded items? At least the first two anyway.

By the way thanks everyone for the responses. The donkey video was great.
Not a single argument trying to straddle the line and find a happy middle ground. Perfect.

Criminal horses such as the serial killer Red Rum and the extortionist and master of disguise Shergar. Red Rum is estimated to have killed somewhere in the region of 150 people. He was sentenced to a mere 20 years after the first five killings, but he was on the streets again within a fortnight. Released to kill and kill again. Shergar was let off with nothing more than a few weeks of community service leading to a band of vigilante thugs taking the law into their own hands.

Ungulates are those creatures that wear the feet of Satan and are thus marked as evil for all to see. In medieval times it was common for horses to be executed for their crimes and then dragged through the streets and whipped for all to see, so that young ponies would see their fate should they stray from the straight and narrow.

Yes. I am just trying to force people to make the unapologetic case for one side or the other. I don't have any problem with the balanced and sensible arguments....but this isn't the place for them damn it.

All animals get abused when they come under man's control. Isn't that what they are for?

What I don't understand is how horseracing is still popular. Surely, since the invention of the wheel horses are very slow and only capable of this for ridiculously short journeys.

National hunt racing is a little more interesting. We watch in hope of seeing some exciting accidents in which jockey or horse are fatally (hopefully with lots of blood) injured.

Flat racing is just silly, little baby two year old horses ridden by anorexic midgets. These horses aren't strong enough yet to go as fast as they will when they are four or five. Yet the big money prizes are for these races.

Rich punters pay millions for unbroken yearlings. Most of these turn out to be too slow to pull a milkcart, never race and go back to the sales at two or three to fetch somewhere in the low hundreds.

Most of them have been spoiled for any other equine use (except meat, snake venom or pregnancy testing kits) by the way they were bred and through being ridden too young.

My answer to the imaginary poll is - don't know.

To the first sentence I say sure. To the second, not really. They are/were for things like labor, recreation, trade and companions as pets. Any abuse they get is secondary and not their ultimate purpose.

Jaybe "All animals get abused when they come under man's control"

Not only animals, athletes get more or less the same treatmant, the only difference is that they signed for it,and they race without something on their backs(appart from advertisement).
