Horse Racing: Animal abuse or innocent sport.

Well it would be even slower -but more amusing, and much easier to find jockeys!

Anybody read Conspiracy of Dunces? I picture Ignatius J. Reilly leisurely going around a shaded track eating a cream puff and smoking under a near-death little pony.

Yet another poll-less horse racing thread.

Apparently you have a bug in your bum about horse racing, joderu.

Personally, I think that there are good and bad sides of the sport. Many of the animals are much better taken care of than they would be if they were not race horses. Sadly, the converse is true as well. I think a great deal of it has to do with the breeders, handlers and owners. The jockeys are just entirely too small to blame (my mom always told me that I should pick on someone my own size).

In all, I love going to the races. I find it to be an innocent sport.

I don't think he does. He tried to correct his mistake of not including a poll in the first thread (this thread) by creating a second thread and failed to correct it in his second thread. Rest assured though that he knows how to make polls now.

You're late to the game on this so it would be long-winded for me to explain. Suffice it to say that, about my poll --- I've grasped it.

I was more curious about your thoughts on horse racing and why it's been a subject for you.

Mostly indifferent. I do think that anytime you have any kind of industry where animals are tied into a profit motive they tend to get abused and horse racing could probably do more to protect them but that inhibits their ability to make money. However, I mainly created the thread because it is in the news right now.

I imagine it might be interesting if you like to gamble but I have never been to a race. My Dad went years ago and said that the two minutes while the horses were racing was great, the half hour in between races less so.

That's very true. Of course, if you just nailed the race, it's 13 minutes of basking in your glory, 5 minutes of waiting to get your payout, 10 minutes of guessing the winner of the next one and 2 minutes of hoping you don't lose what you just won.
