How to gather stories for a book

Hello,

I'm embarking on my first book and I wish to enlist and incorporate peoples true stories into the book (similar to Chicken Soup of the Soul).

I'm wondering do I have to get people to sign something to give me permission to use their story in the book?

Do I have to compensate people for their stories?

How or where can one ask for stories (forums/craigslist)?

Please share any information that you think would be pertinent.

I'm sorry if this is not the right topic area to post this.

Thank you.

Having them sign a release is a good idea.

You don't have to but it depends on how the release is written.

Depends on who you want to interview. Forums are a great way to target the people you want to talk to. Craigslist is a good idea too.

Thank you for the response.

I can search the web, but if anyone knows of release forms available for this specific purpose, please let me know where.

Thanks!

In case anyone is interested, I found some detailed answers here:
en.allexperts.com/q/Published-E-published-2388/Release-forms-contributing-writers-1.htm

which led to finding out about "Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts". There is one in my area that will give a half hour consultation with a Lawyer for $35.

During my web search, I came across "Another Sky Press" who have an interesting new business model. You can read their online books free before purchasing/donating:
anothersky.org

I hope this is of some help to others.

:)
