I am a Kindle Killer

So, I am now on my THIRD Kindle since February. I received my Kindle for my birthday and was just absolutely tickled! I went a bit nuts downloading all the freebies, buying a ton of stuff I'd been unable to get quickly at the library and generally having a blast. One day I was reading and my Kindle randomly shut itself off and began rebooting. Weird. An isolated incident I thought, but alas, it began happening with more and more regularity. I called the lovely Amazon folks and they sent me a new Kindle within days. I shipped the old one back and happily began playing with #2. All was well for some time with #2, until our trip to Mexico at the end of April.

Now I don't know about you folks, but I squirrel away books for a trip. Books that I KNOW I'm going to love get carefully stowed away for that lovely time on the beach. I had about 15 books that I'd designated "holiday reads" ready to go. You can imagine my horror when on Day 1 of our vacation my Kindle DIED! The screen was absolutely BLANK. Nothing I did revived it, there was no sign of life whatsoever. I wracked my brain for something I could have done to my beloved Kindle, but couldn't come up with anything. It had been living in a ziploc (we were near the pool), and had only been out of my hands long enough for me to go to the buffet for lunch. Even then, it had been in a bag sitting on our table with my kids guarding it while I went to get food. Oh the horror. I tried hard not to scream out loud but the screaming inside my head was worthy of a Hitchcock film. An entire WEEK without my Kindle??? ONE paperback back up novel to last the whole trip???? OH MY GOD! I hyperventilated a little bit there. It was bad. Thankfully, the gift shop had a couple of paperbacks that weren't too outrageously priced and my girls had brought a couple of books each so I could read those too. Whew. Still...Kindle #2 was toast.

Kindle #3 arrived within 48hrs of my call when we got home. I'm almost afraid to touch it.

I have to say that Amazon's customer service and their policy on Kindle's is nothing short of fantastic. I'm also incredibly grateful for the Archived items. I'd have been REALLY upset if I'd not been able to retrieve all those books I bought. There are over 100 books in my archive.

So, anyone else kill a Kindle? (or a nook or any other ereader?)

Whoah. That sucks. It would be interesting to find out what problems were. I'm also curious about the infant mortality rate for Kindles in general.

Mine has been a workhorse.

And now we wait for the eBook haters and the "this is why I will never own an eReader" crowd.

Well lets hope we don't see that kind of negativity. Let me tell you, I love the feel, the smell of a book in my hands, but lets face it...when you travel, a Kindle is WAY easier.

I'm hoping 3rd time is a charm. I got a skin for my Kindle so I'll be choked if I have to peel it off!

Tell me about it. With the airplanes and their increasing greed with luggage weight, an eReader is a no-brainer. Those 3-4 books you are no longer taking with you equates to a bottle of booze to bring back.

Which skin did you get?

Was the content able to transfer form one device to another?

Yep. Amazon stores everything in an archive so you never lose your stuff unless you deliberately delete it. That is tough to do. The only thing that didn't transfer is my Samples. That is nothing though, I can easily find the samples again.

You were in that crowd at one point, no?:whistling:

I love books, I mean... "phisically", the smell of paper and ink, the soft noise of turning a page, the feeling of a book in your hands, and it so wonderfull to look at a wall covered by books....but I don't have many walls left, and my hunger for books never decreases, and the weight when you travel? I'm definitely looking forward to buying a kindle, I was thinking of the kindle dx, the other ones look too small. What do you think? Does anybody have one? but it is expensive...

I felt the same about the Kindle, about being small. But, I got used to it, and don't mind flipping pages fast. It gives me time to breathe as I press the page turner. You could check it out at Target. Not sure if there are anything inside the Kindle. Has anyone tried Kindle at Target?

I do have hard time reading PDF files on the regular size Kindle. You can enlarge the size, but I'm too lazy to push this button and that.

But the size of regular Kindle is best. It fits in pocket of my jacket.

My Libre has told me that I am unable to fit anymore books on it, even though I should be nowhere near the halfway mark for book capacity. I haven't killed it yet, but I fail to keep it charged.

I think Isabell has a DX. I think they are too big. The other one is smaller but the reading area is about on par with a mass market paperback.

Yeah I like the size of the regular Kindle just like I like the size of traditional paperbacks. I HATE hardback books, in large part because of their size. I think the DXes are good for viewing full scale PDFs and such. But I don't need that.

For me ereaders are superior to traditional books in every way EXCEPT that they can break down on you. I am still using the same 1st gen Kindle I bought back in 2008 when they first came out and everyone said it wouldn't catch on. So it has suited me well. Very well. I would say once or twice a year it will go glitchy on me. But a hard reset would always fix it.

I do think when I head back to the States next week I will go ahead and buy the newest version. But I will always keep my good ol' 1st gen. Stash it away in a droor somewhere. It might be a collector's item one day. :)

I have the latest kindle. I enjoy reading through it. One good feature is the change of font size which I can change to suit my comfort. Kindle is also light and the size is just right. Best of all, it is easy on the eyes.

Yikes, remind me not to give you may kindle for safekeeping :)
Seriously, hope you have better luck with them in the future.

I bought mine for travel. I can blow up the text big enough for my eyesight so it's worked ok for me. It's a great back-saver.
