I don't know where to go with that?!

As a socially awkward person, I often find myself struggling through small talk, usually I make it through okay, occasionally someone will say something that I just have no way to reply to, today was one of those days.

The hubby and I went to a library book sale and were at check out, the very nice older lady told me "oh, all your books have lovely covers you must pick them for their covers" to which I said "yes, I am a very visual shopper, I will by anything with an interesting cover" she then looked at my husband and said "lucky for you she picks books by their covers" o_O

Now I could tell she meant well, she was implying he was nice looking (yet at the same time inferring that was all he was?) so I just smiled to fill the awkward silence but truly didn't know where to go with that. Anyways I thought it might be fun to share our social missteps and maybe seek some guidance on how to recover from them.

Lucky for your husband, you didn't pick up books written in braille. :D I would've asked her on what basis would she pick a book? I would then talk extensively about buying books based on how much they weigh as a heavy book, certainly has some deeeeeep thoughts and plots. :devillook

You should've dived over the counter and hit her a hard smack in the mouth.

I don't think you had a social misstep -- the librarian did.
It did seem a really odd thing to say to perfect strangers. I mean this wasn't the library we usually go to and so it's not like she's seen us around and we are on joking terms. Ah, well I guess we have all blurted something weird out when talking to new folks.

My father in law teases me still for the first thing I said to him. I was like 14 and really shy, he being a cranky old man snapped at me "don't you ever talk" and I replied "only to people I like" we have been great friends ever since :)
