I have nasty, weird neighbors - help!

To make a long story short, our neighbors have been burning stuff (not sure what, but it's not wood or even trash) every night as soon as it gets dark. We've long suspected something strange going on there because there are cars and trucks and vans coming and going at all hours of night and day.

Anyway, the smell practically knocks us down when we go outside, and the smell even gets into our house when our heat comes on. It smells very strong, like roasted pig or something. This has happened every single night for about two weeks. We called the police, but they haven't done anything yet, and probably won't.

Do you lovely, civil, creative people have any ideas on what we could do to either keep the smell out of our home or on something to make our neighbors stop this?

Thanks in advance
:(

i'm afraid i won't be much of a help but i try anyway!! i don't like this air fresheners but you could try something like that!!
and i know that sounds stupid, but you could talk to them or ask what they burn...
and i would try the police again!!
sorry!!
and sorry that you have such strange neighbors!! :(

Ok, not only am I an avid reader, I'm also EXTREMELY paranoid. Everyone is up to deviousness as far as I am concerned (maybe even I am too).

I say voodoo. Perhaps a secret cult. See any robes or funny hats? Snakes?

To make them stop would be to curse them, I suppose. To mask the smell, Vick VapoRub.

I'll assume that these neighbors are troublemakers or too creepy to approach, so you might have to do some investigating.
Do your other neighbors also complain of the odors?
If you think it is safe to do so without being seen, write down the license plate numbers of the visitors. They might be people getting together drinking, smoking dope, and having serious munchies with Hawiian style, roast pig cooking. Or they might be serial killers and cannibals "getting rid of the evidence".

You might report them to the Health Department with a complaint of bad odors.
As a last resort make an anonymous call (not from your house) to the police saying that you have been smelling a strong odor of fingernail polish remover from that address (polish remover, ammonia and sulfurous smells are associated with meth labs).

Perhaps a secret cult.
Of course it's some kind of cult :)
First of all you have to investigate. What are they doing there. Then slip, no doubt only onder cover. Take a photograph. And at last show evidance to police. Offenders are punished, justice obtaned. Nights are quiet, sound sleep :)

 I must say you have really weird neighbours!
Before taking any extreme step, try talking to them on friendly terms.
Walk up to their hosue and casually say, "Of late I have noticed a funny smell. Have you? Do you have any idea what it is?". Make sure you dont go alone.
Whatever you do, be careful. You dont know whether or how dangerous they are .

Are you so far in the country that there are no bans on outdoor burning?

Do you know these people at all? Have you ever talked to them before?
Would a phone call to them be out of the question? "Hey, is everything alright? I'm smelling something out of the ordinary burning and I was wondering if you guys are in need of help or anything?"

I come from an area where a "neighbor" is 25 feet away. It sounds like you are a little more spread out. Are there any other people in the area you're friends with that could get together and form a friendly group to pay a daylight visit to these bothersome people?

i can sympathize. we had really awful neighbours who did the same kind of thing, and were always fighting. we had to call the police one time as the dad tried to run over the adult son with a truck. it just went on and on. and we didn't want to get involved for fear of retaliation.
call the fire dept. they will know the bylaws etc. i am pretty sure regardless of where you live, rural or not, you need a burn permit. also if they are burning something stinky ie tires or plastic it is because they don't want to pay dumping fee's so this is definitley illegal. fire dept is the way to go.
i would not confront them at all, and if they ask you about calls to fire dpt or police deny deny deny. better to avoid confrontation with them, leave it to the pro's.

good luck! keep us posted.

I think you should lay mines in their yard and strafe the front of the house with machine gun fire!

Failing that :D

You say they are burning stinking stuff all the time? Maybe there is an environmental agency you can report them to that can investigate?

Failing that... You can go to a pay phone miles from where you live. Call the local cops. Tell them you have inside information they are dealing drugs. Sit back and watch the fun :D

Thanks to all of you for your very helpful (and entertaining) tips. I don't really feel comfortable going over to their house - I'm paranoid, and their weird behavior spooks me.

And yes, Motokid, I am kind of out in the country a bit. I have neighbors on all sides, but they are at least 500 feet away in each direction. I guess I should be thankful, at least, that these folks are not trying to run over each other!

I'm going to give it another day or two and then try the police and/or the health department.

Thanks again! :)

If there is a lot of traffic in and out, I would guess it's something to do with drugs. If there is a chemical odor (maybe covered up with something else, like trash burning) it might be a home lab for methamphetamine or something. If that was my neighbor, I would wait until the smell was present and then call the fire dept. and ask them to take a look. Even if it's legal burning, they need a burn permit and shouldn't be doing it after dark.

If they find out you called, just say you were worried and trying to help. If there's nothing illegal going on, they have nothing to worry about.

If it IS meth, the fumes can do you a lot of damage over time.

If it IS meth, it'll kill you if you get close enough to the cooking process!!

Dont you live in America?? Shoot them all and get a good lawyer, they'll probably get you out in a couple of years!! :D

Yay for living in the UK, you cant have a bonfire in your garden without the police arriving

I would approach it head on.Knock on the door and ask them.If their actions are causing you problems you should nip it in the bud.And if they are up to no good they may think twice if they think they are arousing suspicion.

Thanks, everyone! I didn't know this thread was even still going!

The burning smell and weird activity has dwindled to nearly nothing. I can't be 100% sure, but I think the cops said something to them. I still feel suspicious about them, and I still think they were doing meth or marijuana or something illegal.

Believe me, I've still got my eye on them, and if they start acting strange again, I'll certainly call my local authorities. I won't live next door to a meth lab!

Thanks again for your suggestions and thoughts. :)
