I just saw the movie A.I.

i like it a lot even with that ending, but probably would be better if ended a little before

Who do you think would have made a good director for this film?

definitively paul anderson ;) :D

just kidding,
i would like to see cuaron in a project like this

I loved it - the story (Kubrick's and Aldiss' story) is amazing and Spielberg's directing and special effects are the best in recent years. I, too, did not expect it to go on that long in the end, but I didn't downright dislike the ending as is.

Good movie!

Cheers

I really enjoyed the movie, but the ending did somewhat ruin it for me. It's the kind of ending where I think I sort of got ripped off. Like, they could have done something better, or just flipped some stupid idea in order to end it nicely. They got lazy and just threw that in because the movie needed to end somehow.

Hang on - how can you call them lazy when they added 30 minutes of film? The general concensus is that the film should have ended with the boy stuck under the ferris wheel, but it didn't, it went on for at least half an hour.

How is that lazy?

Cheers

the general concensus of where the film should have ended may not have occured to spielberg. to say they laboured for another 30 mins of film is to assume it occured to him to end it there but that he decided to stick it out longer. but if it had and that's where it ended i would have been disappointed by the lack of ending in that case.

i just felt it was lazy because it seemed sort of "from out of nowhere". how convenient to console this "child" with a reproduction of his loving mother (developed by aliens) who explains the way things are with him and gives him another day of her love in order to help his future existence pan out nicely. i'm sure i'm summarizing it cruelly, but i felt they did the same thing to the ending so it's tit for tat :p

at any rate, martin, it's been a long time since i saw it and i don't remember the details of the movie too much anymore. i just recall the general feeling of "WTH". much like when i read Oryx and Crake. and that's one of my favorite books!

Ok, fair enough. I do (somewhat) agree with you - the ending was a tad bit too much. It was just that I didn't understand where the 'laziness' came from.

developed by aliens
I'm gonna forgive that slip up.

Cheers

they weren't aliens, they were advanced artificial intelligence. david was the first of their make, so, understandably, they wanted to find him and study him. in the process they make a pretty amazing discovery: love, the first human emotion david ever felt. that's the answer they've been searching for. they're no longer empty and incomplete. once david discovers what dreaming is, it's safe to say he's as human as you and me.

so the film is mainly about us, not the a.i.

I'm not saying you have to like it. I was just clearing up what I thought you might've misunderstood.

i know. i didnt mean to imply you were saying i had to like it. i was just stating that even with the recollection of that element of the story it didnt help for me.
