I know there's horror threads already...

...but I don't remember reading a horror book as an adult. I read some from a series called 'Point Horror' as a teen but don't remember any of the stories. I like horror films (kind of) but have just never thought to read a horror story... anyway, so now, after reading We Need To Talk About Kevin, which is quite horrifying itself, but in a different way, I thought I might as well try something in this genre.

Being a 'newbie' I don't want to start off on something that's going to make me frightened to leave the house, or go to bed at night, or something; neither do I want to read something so "soft", it'll put me off horror for another ten years.

So what do you suggest?
 
Try "It" by Stephen King or pretty much any Stephen King book.

Also, what kind of horror? Psychological? Super natural? What?
 
Erm, I'm not really sure what kind of horror...

I have been most freaked out (ever) by The Shining. I was most impressed by the film, Saw.

So, I'd guess at Psychological, but I'm not sure... I'll have a look out for It. Thanks for the suggestion.
 
Pretty much anything by Stephen King should keep you in love with horror for the rest of your life, but some other books I've enjoyed are:

Dean Koontz - Phantoms
Robert Bloch - Psycho (very psychological)
Donald E. Westlake - The Ax (not horror, but definately full of macabre elements)
Peter Straub - Ghost Story
Michael Crichton - Prey (a "Thriller" but scared me at times)

Ok, you'll definitely like "Intensity" by Dean Koontz. Check it out.
 
Intensity is a good suggestion, I'd forgotten about that one.
The Bad Place by Dean Koontz is good also.
 
I am reading Intensity by Dean Koontz now and am so glad it was recommended, as I never ever would have picked it up otherwise.

It's fantastic, a real page (chapter!) turner and I'm hooked!! You don't realise until you put the book down and find yourself thinking what she should do next!

So, thanks for all the suggestions, I will be sure to check some of the others out after I've finished too :)

I know I've already expressed my thoughts on this book elsewhere but what on earth was there in it that you could find good? :confused:
 
Don't know what to tell you Stewart, but I liked it. :) Is it my favorite Koontz book? Nope. Alot of people rant and rave about Phantoms and that's the one I can't stand.
 
Ah...Phantoms was my favourite of Koontz. :)

I'd be interested, when you have finished, of knowing what you thought of Coldheart Canyon; I thought it the weakest of Barker's canon.

I remember feeling the exact same way when I first started it. Very, very good book. I'm planing on re-reading it.

Also, when you're done with that, try Watchers by Dean Koontz. :)

I'm not sure if I'd call it weak, it is a bit winded though. I think it had a great beginning, it had me captured. But now I am at the point where if it doesn't pick up again I will be dissappointed. What is do you recommend for Barker? This is only the second I've read.
 
I have Sacrament, just haven't gotten to it yet. I appreciate the advice and it will be the next Barker book I read.:)

Good. It really will draw you in. Take your time with it and enjoy.
