Im looking for a book for my brother-HELP

My brother is 14 and isnt into books so much...I had him read the Lord of the Flies and he HATED IT. He wont read Twilight either...I need a good idea of a book for him. Hes your average boy-into the fighting and what not. But I want him to learn to like reading and show him that reading isnt a bad thing and you CAN enjoy a book. Please~can anyone help me here?
 
I suggest comic books/graphic novels for mature readers.
Maus by Spiegelman
V for Vendetta - Alan Moore
The Watchmen - Moore
The Killing Joke - Moore (it's about the Joker - supposedly Heath Ledger read this in preparation for The Dark Knight)
The Sandman - Neil Gaiman
Sin City - Frank Miller
etc.
Reading those could get him more into reading and perhaps he'll branch off into non-graphic novels.

I'm not familiar with for 14-year old boys, but if he has any interest in sports (or a particular sport) or music, you could look for something in those areas.

Science fiction is also a possibility. The Jules Verne books or Asimov or Bradbury.
 
Yes, Silverseason..I was going to suggest something in the Music genre to read. How about a band biography?

Eric Clapton has a new one, The Who maybe?
 
I second Garth Nix, and also recommend The Darren Shan Saga (twelve books total) by Darren Shan. Rather good teenage vampire fiction which comes in easy to read, short books which are great for the teen reader. ;)
 
Vampirates a real page turner 2. Fablehaven heats up 40 pages into the book 3.percy jackson and the olympians amazing!!!! they are all series and fablehave and vampirates have 3 books out and percy jackson 4
 
Maybe he'd like Caught Stealing by Charlie Huston. I read it a few months ago, and remember thinking that it'd be perfect for a teenage boy. Not that it wasn't fine for this old lady . . .

Huston's writing a vampire series too, but I haven't tried those.
 
Maybe he would be better with non-fiction, particularly about anything that he is interested in. Many boys do not enjoy fiction much at the age of 14.
 
I think I read Ender's Game when I was 14. Great book.

As far as non-fiction goes, what are his interests?
 
As a 14-year-old girl, I can tell you that it's hard as heck to get boys to read at that age! What he needs is something to get him really hooked, such as a series that he could continue if he enjoyed it. I would suggest the Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo. The books are easy to read, and they hook you from the first chapter. The villains are easy to hate, and the good guys are very enjoyable. If he has a good sense of humor, A Series of Unfortunate Events is a very good one, a little below his reading level, but so funny. If he enjoys history, anything by Ann Rinaldi will do. She is a brilliant historical fiction writer with bibliographies that are pages long. She is also entertaining and engaging. Definitely give him the Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer. It may look big, but it is so good! I'd rate it as my all-time favorite book. It's a mix of historical fiction, adventure, fantasy, and mystery. Another easy read.

As a former 14 yr old boy, I can tell you that it can be tough. I was 19 or 20 when I first became interested in reading.

Here are some books that actually got me to read when I was 14, and some that would have...

My Side of the Mountain, if he likes this book, he'll like Hatchet
The Outsiders, I actually read this book in 5th grade, but it caught my attention like a pretty girl covered in lasagna. I was fascinated with this tough guy lifestyle.
The Call of the Wild, and White Fang, great for teenage boys.
Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn
I would have loved Fablehaven, or the Leven Thumps books

Twilight has nothing of interest for the average 14yr old boy. I am 35 and I nearly gagged from all the romance. Fine books, but page after page of the ramblings of a lovesick 17 yr old girl has no appeal to a 14 yr old boy.

How about Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk? It's pretty violent (hopefully, not too violent... He might be right on the line of "too young" for this book) but you said he's into fighting...

I almost suggested that but thought better of it.
 
My two little brothers loved to read when they were 14, but they're both geeks (the adorable kind, of course) and got into biographies and chemistry...

Try approaching it from the movies first because usually the books are so much better. The first one that came to mind is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - both movie and book are fantastic!
 
I have a 15-year-old brother whom I've been trying to bring over to the bibliophile side for years. I'm strict when it comes to birthdays and other gift holidays that presents must be books for people and have difficulties when it comes to my little brother accomplishing this. I know a few years ago he read the Spiderwick Chronicles and loved those. I'm not sure if he has read them, but I also bought him Susan Cooper's book series The Dark Is Rising (another forum recommended this to me when I was having issues deciding what to spur him on to read). My brother does tend to enjoy listening to books on tape more than reading them. I keep trying to discourage him from this, but I guess at least he is getting some good out of it.
A 14-year-old boy might enjoy reading Suzanne Collins Gregor the Overlander series. It is about a boy and he has adventures. I think to help you out more I'll talk to my brother about books that he has really enjoyed recently.
