I'm So Happy

I knew I would like The Lord of the Rings so I bought the books, yet the books have been sitting on my shelf for a long while now. I expected it would be a commitment to read them since the trilogy is so long. I started The Fellowship of the Ring last night, though, and I'm hooked. I should be able to finish the trilogy in a week. I'm so happy. Then I'll be able to rent all three movies this weekend. I refused to watch the movies until I read the books.

Well, I finished it. I couldn't put it down. I'm glad the ending was gradual, with a lot of stuff happening after the climax.

Glad to hear you enjoyed LOTR. Have you read any other works by Tolkien?

I read The Hobbit about ten years ago, but didn't have the momentum to get into the LOTR after that. I'm going to reread The Hobbit I think just because it'll be better with more understanding.

Now that's self discipline.

I kind of cheated (or lied) 'cause I saw the first movie a few years ago, but it really didn't make much sense. Now, having finished the books, I watched the first movie again last night, and really enjoyed it. I watched the second movie this morning, and I'm going to watch the third movie tonight.

I'm a little disappointed with some of the liberties the movies take with the plot, but besides that I find the movies really complement the books and bring them to life. However, the books are by far better, and much more cozy.

The thing about movies, for me at least, is I often get frustrated with the actors. Say I read such and such novel and I picture the lead guy as pale, short, and bald with bad skin and they cast a tall, dark skinned man for the role, or vice versa. The acting may be fabulous but I still resent the encroachment on my view of the characters.

Another thing is when the most popular stars keep reappearing in films despite how well they fit the role. That bugs me too.

I, like you, try to read the book first.
