I know i've only joined this site around four months maybe, but has it always been this dead? I like these forums and i visit them regularly, but it just seems like there is very little going on atm. maybe it's just today, where i've been on the computer a lot, and this has been a slow day with little posts!

It used to be more active and more lively. My presence has not help the cause to be earnest. Many have existed BAR years back and have never appeared again since. BAR is not the same BAR when I became a member. Back then thread where more about books and reading and less about other topics. Again, I admit I have not been helpful in providing that old BAR style of discussion. Nonetheless I love BAR. I have weathered many storms, and I will remain. BAR is still one of my favorite forums and it will likely continue to be. Hopefully new members like yourself will take advantage of the opportunity to revive BAR with bright discussion and opinion. BAR is what it is and it is, in my view, a great forum. Stay awhile longer and see BAR grow with each new unique member. Like you LaGs.

I used to be on here when it was really busy, and have logged in for the first time in two years today. It does seem to have gotten a little quieter, but there really is only one solution: post more. If old members have dropped off, it's up to new ones to emerge and fill the gap.
All I can say is that it's not as bad as the lethargy in some forums that I used to frequent. One gaming forum I know used to be very active, and now the new post count is down to about one a week.

haha i know what you mean...i browse the internet most days, and i've made a point to visit this website everytime...but it's just, well, dead really..
It happens on all forums but I think literature forums are more susceptible to it. Readers are a fickle bunch and it is easier to herd cats than get the regular members to read the same book and discuss it.

The advent of Twitter and Facebook have taken a toll on all message boards. There are still those of us who enjoy this experience as well though.
I've not been here long, but I'm enjoying it here so far. No troll action (that I've seen), and little spam...way to go Mods! I'm still feeling a bit tentative as some readers can be pretty snobby about their books. I'm an avid reader, but tend to avoid what passes for "literature" these days. I like to be entertained and not lectured.

Don't know if this is the place to post it but I've just finished a book that I still don't know whether or not I liked it but it was made into a movie so I guess it caught some attention. The book - "Winter's Bone" by Daniel Woodrell, is a really unusual book, the narrative style almost has a poetic rhythm to it. I started it, put it aside for a day, then went back to it and it kept me page turning. It's not my usual choice of book but someone mentioned it so I picked it up at Chapters. Maybe many of you have read it - the locale is the Ozarks where they "cook crank", all seem to be inter-related and have a code of honour particular to their area. The main character is a young girl who is struggling to look after the family - the father has skipped bail and they are in danger of losing their home if he doesn't turn up for his court hearing. She takes on the task of looking for him against the wishes of the 'tribe'. She runs into trouble and it takes a violent turn. It's an interesting read - anyone who has read it please let me have your opinion. momac

Ah, that could be it.
I was thinking it's the economy. People don't have time to get on forums at work, for they're too busy pretending to do work, so that they don't get laid off.

Well forums tend to have it's quiet times as well, it's a normal thing. There's this other sports forum I joined as well for like...I don't know...since 2006 - you do the maths, my brain isn't thinking as it should be right now.
It's been quiet for like a couple of months now...well not just a couple months but a few months in fact since those crises in the Middle-East/Africa. Well, most of we members knew it ain't dead yet, not yet at least.
But just give it some time, the forum will bounce back itself in time.
Things/Factors why forums tend to be quiet at certain periods (you can consider them):
-Students having huge/major exams
-Bad internet connection
-Huge loads of work
-No new posts/lack of "new creativity"?
Well there may be other factors as well. Not just these few. But it depends more on how the forum takes it course, so yeah.

I read it, and like you I wasn't sure to begin with. It's a story I'll never forget, the characters are very real as well as the setting.
My son had seen the film and been so taken with it he bought the book.

Hello Jaybe: Glad someone else has had a gander at this book - it is kind of unforgettable, don't think I've read anything like it with the writing style and the plot. Kinda glad though that I don't live in the Ozarks - I'm sure the poverty must be appalling if it's anything like that portrayed in the book - the main character had wanted to join the army so that she could have a better life. I think I might see if I can get a copy of the film, probably Amazon would have one. Thanks for responding. momac

Though I don't think this forum is that empty or lacking in conversation as some of the above posters, I don't think it's facebook or twitter as much as Goodreads that's probably done the most damage. For generic to niche and specialist literature and book related chat, that site has probably taken a fair few visitors away.
I am member of several forums, some active some not. I joined but had not been active on this forum due to time constraint.
Here's what I have noticed. The forums who are strict about promotions other than specifically allotted promotional threads, but generous with signatures, in terms of space and links, are doing much much better. The reason is simple, signatures do not interfere with the message as much as text of message.
The reader can easily ignore the signature, unless he/she finds information of interest.
Kindle boards, mobileread is a good example. Just something worth consideration by the administration. Thanks.

Hi will, I agree that goodreads is quite active. But I think this forum is more similar to kindle boards and mobileread. Forums like that should have more effect.
NOTE: BTW, How did you add hyperlink in your signature to "spooky reads."

Hello drdin: Am a fairly new member of this forum and retired for 10 years so am not too familiar with a lot of the new technology and terms which appear in the posts and do not understand what it is that you are meaning, signatures do not interfere with the message as much as the text of the message. I also do not have an e-book and am not familiar with mobileread. I would be grateful if you could explain your post (if you don't mind) in simpler terms for me. Just the other day someone was talking about an Android phone and I looked that one up on the Internet - interesting times we live in. Thanks - momac
