What happens when a man loses touch with his wife? When the magic goes out of the marriage? Is divorce the answer? Are differences irreconcilable?

Excerpt:
They did not have proper quarrels either, as they were both careful not to create scenes in front of the children. They ripped into each other viciously, in short angry spurts, said hurtful things, sulked, and put on a mask for the children under which fermented a slow bitter poison, corrosive like acid, eating away at all that had made possible their coming together.
He wished they would really quarrel, bring out all the recriminations, thrash it out, as it were, and come to a decision. He wished he could shout, and make himself heard. He wished he could break through the deafness that Divya used as a strategic defence.

Some wattpad pro suggested I post the story in parts, to make it easier to read on the go. I deleted the story, thereby losing the earlier reads and posted the first few paragraphs, the rest to follow in weekly parts.

Please read the story. I wrote it because this is something I feel strongly about. Siblings quarrel, as do friends, but (mostly ) reconcile. Why is is that only married couples find differences 'irreconcilable'?

Mid life crisis (I think) is a convenient label we use for the actions we want to disown.

Divya's reaction is typical of a woman / man who fears the other half will end the marriage. She starts protecting herself at all levels; emotionally she shuts off Raj, financially, she gets a job, and in a bid to stick to her self respect, she rejects alimony. She does not fight for the marriage, though.

Raj does. Independent of Divya, he introspects and takes a long look at the lives around him, and decides to break through the impasse.

I appreciate that's the intention but it's not the effect, due to one sentence:

'I am taking the children with me (to India) I will not give you custody.'

She's got a job but her kids are american kids, thanks Mom...

You are absolutely right, that is the effect.

And that is how it usually is. The people involved take up stances, lay claims to house / child / dog / last bent spoon in the pantry. "Mine!" "I will fight for it!" They create a din and shut out the voice that says, "My marriage! I will fight for it!" They are terrified the other person does not care, which mostly isn't true.

This was a story of hubris caused by a breakdown of communication. It felt genuine.
