Is there a "good" self-published book?

He then acknlowedges that five is the new three which, he says, "probably goes a long way to explaining why my books have been called hyper-active, energised, or action-packed." It does not, however, explain why they have also been called shit.

LOL @ Stewart :D

Recipe books and one purchased novel

A few years ago i worked for a non profit making youth sports association that self published a book of "favorite recipes" from all of the sporting moms. It sold well as a fund raiser for the kids purely because the moms that submitted a recipe all wanted a copy to actually see their work in print.

The weird thing is that the book managed to get my wife and I hooked on self published cookbooks because generally they're written by busy working moms/dads who have a REAL WORLD kitchen and use real world ingredients...ie they are NOT the HUGE coffee sized glossy paged manuals that are written by the likes of Martha Stewart etc....and they AREN'T filled with ingredients that a)you've never heard of and b) you'll never find unless you head off to some weird asian superstore in the back of beyond.

During the summer, whilst searching sites like "Publish America" and "Trafford Publishing", I purchased a NOVEL. To this day, I don't really know why I bought it and when it arrived I half expected it to be a self published dud.

I'll admit that it's NOT the best written thing in the world (it would have benefitted from a half decent editing process) but, pretty soon after beginning to read, I was flipping through the book pages really quickly, just to find out what was going to happen next. I initially wanted to give the book 10 minutes of my time, but two hours later I was still going and thoroughly gripped by it.

Basically, its a book about an orphanage and the experiences of the workers and kids who exist from day to day whilst a civil war is raging all around them.

I've read alot of the books written by the returning veterans of war, but the novel is written about the the things that you or I would go through if we had to endure some of the horrors of war. A "man in the street" perspective.

Anyways...I think its a worthwhile read...but check out some of the cookbooks too..I think they're worth it.

Well, you've changed your tune. On your other thread you said you bought it because the author had the same name as you and, er, was in the same career as you. The only thing you seemed to miss out that the author was you.

Seriously, if you want to promote your book here, put a link to where it can be bought in your signature and leave it at that. If you keep bringing it up you'll only get your name turning to mud.

Ok Motokid, I'll stop trying to inform people about a particular book that I purchased.

You're right that in a previous thread I DID mention that the author had the same first name as I (even though it's spelled differently) and also that the blub on the publisher website says he's a soccer coach too......but that ISN'T any particular reason why I should have purchased it.

Quite frankly I dont give a monkey's whether people read the book or not. I'm NOT the author, but just thought that I'd give readers an insight into something that I found interesting particularly as I followed your advice about trying not to shove the book down anyones throat. Its NOT my intention nor has it EVER been that way, so I'm TRUELY SORRY that you've been so annoyed and upset at my postings.

Perhaps now though..I won't be posting my thoughts on other books like "Long walk to freedom" by nelson mandela, or the series of books by Andy McNabb...etc......after all......I wouldn't want people to think I wrote them too, now would I?

PLEASE...could you and I just start over here?

I do think Stewart might have been a bit harsh here. I think MWC. was trying to repost his original thoughts in a manner which was not "apparently self-promoting". This post never even mentioned a book title specifically and I don't see that as a spamming or promoting any more than talking about "Life Of Pi", or "Lolita", or any other book. I think MWC was genuine, and within forum guidelines and general etiquette.

I also appreciate the cookbook thoughts too. I can see where "real world" recipes from "real world" cooks are worthwhile. Most of the stuff I see in many cookbooks I could never try simply because I couldn't find a few eccential ingredients in my neck of the woods.

MWC, don't mind Stewart so much. He's actually looking out for the forum in general, and if you continue to contribute and join other discussions you'll probably both learn to accept each other and play off each other. Stewart has a vast wealth of knowledge. He's a good guy that sometimes likes to dress in all black.

well thanks Moto for your support and Stewart for your moderation of the forum. I will however NEVER mention an unknown author again.
Quite honestly it hasn't been worth mentioning it.

I do want to thank you both for thinking I was an author though....genereally I'm known as someone who can barely string two sentances together, so for you guys to think that I actually managed to write a book was quiet amusing for me.

I'll stick to the other, well known authors from now on, perhaps even just replying to posts from other readers about the books that we've both been able to open.

On another thought though...Moto...I was absolutely intrigued by your own book (having looked it up)...did Buzz Aldrin do something similar for kids?? hoping to promote their own interest in space travel? I may be far from the mark, or maybe I dreamt it, I dont know.

Love the bike idea though!! well done...VERY good artistry on the pics too...I was impressed...(although that may not take much) LOL!

Colorado Football Book Prospers in Self-Published Edition

The Washington Times updates the story of Colorado journalist Bruce Plasket, who wound up self-publishing his book about the football recruiting scandal at the University of Colorado, BUFFALOED: How Race, Gender and Media Bias Fueled a Season of Scandal. Plasket now indicates two publishers backed out of publishing agreements, both "apparently scared off by warnings of litigation from the attorney for one of the female accusers."

Plasket's book argues that "a feminist district attorney and journalists eager to believe the worst combined to demonize the reputations of the players, coach and university" and finds "no credible evidence to suggest the football program was sanctioning sex-and-booze parties." Sales are reported to be strong at Denver's The Tattered Cover--putting it on the Denver Post paperback bestseller list for the past two weeks.

Didn't Scott Sigler start out self publishing on with his podcast? He is my favorite writer! Also Forbidden Passion by Michael Sidden is one of my favorite books and he is self published as well. I guess it is sort of like indy music, sure some it is bad but every once in awhile you get something really good and it's probably better because they had complete control over how it turned out.

A member stated that self-publishing is a bad idea. That if a work of writting is any good, a "proper" publisher will recognize it and a deal will be made to get the book into print.

I don't think that's exactly true. I'm willing to bet there are plenty of really great stories out there by people who have self-published. There are certainly plenty of bad stories that have been published.

I'd like to know if any of you have found a self-published book worth recommending to people in this forum?

I self published a novella on KDP, and I've had very very little success. To be completely upfront, I've made $4.14. I really just didn't want to deal with publishers and stuff like that, and KDP was so easy. I'm not the greatest at marketing myself, though, so it's kinda just sitting on a bookshelf, never getting touched. :/

If you wanna buy it and read it, I'd be overjoyed :) hahah it's only 99 cents

Everybody has got to start somewhere Eric. Years from now you could be making the big money and it all would have started from that $4.14.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I just wish that I could figure out how to get people to buy it. I haven't sold any copies in so long haha
