John Berendt: The City of Falling Angels

I've had this book hanging around my house for a while now, and I think it is finally time to read it (my brother-in-law wants it when I'm done). I'm just wondering if anyone has read it. If so, is it as good as Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil? I loved that one.

Use spoilers if you're really going to get into plot points!

Did you get round to reading it? I also loved Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil but read some dodgy reviews of this book. Would you recommend it?

Yes, I did. I enjoyed it. I think that a lot of the bad press this book got was a result of how Venetians felt about its publication. Unlike the residents of Savannah, Venetians didn't love the way Berendt portrayed them and their penchant for gossip.

I think that if you liked Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, you'll enjoy this. The writing is similar as is the method of "research".

I preferred Falling Angels over Good and Evil. Good and Evil started out with such promise, but I became frustrated with all the crazy "characters" and town gossip. The side stories in Falling Angels were mostly relevant to the opera house plot, and even the ones that weren't kept my interest. Low expectations probably helped as I was hesitant to begin the book at first. I'm glad I gave it a chance.
