Jonathan Carroll

Some time ago I heard about an author called Jonathan Caroll. He sounded very unique and interesting. I decided to learn more and went off to read up on what novels he had written. The books I found all sounded so amazing! I read some extracts and was even more amazed. His books seem to have a "twin peaks" feel to them. Novels that are strange and deep where you can get lost in. Sometimes described as contemporary fantasy, magical realism, or as Neil Gaiman ( friend and fan ) says of his novels "Jonathan Carrols." Got really excited by this author and planned to buy some of his books. As life sometimes does I got distracted and forgot all about him. Recently was reading Niel Gaiman site and came across him again because his blog was mentioned. ! Now I am all interested and excited again!

So, anybody read anything by him and what do you think?

I came across Jonathon Carroll quite a while ago - I can't remember where-how I came across him first - but I really enjoyed most of his books, in particular; The Land Of Laughs and Kissing the Beehive.

Some of his other I found didn't work quite as well.

Which have you read?

I actually have not read any of them yet! But I do plan to get around to it! Glad to find somebody that has heard of him and also read his books. I did quite like the look of Kissing the Behive.

Have you read Wooden Sea? I quite liked the look of that one also :)

I've got The Wooden Sea but not read it yet.

I think Kissing The Beehive is the best of his I've read so far.

All his books are very similar in style, so the first few one reads are exciting and seem quite unique then they become less so the more of them you read.

But they are beautifully written, wonderful prose, I'd definately recommend you give him a try.

I think I first heard of Carroll through "Listmania" on Amazon. Sadly, he is still in my "To Be Read" pile. I've got Bones of the Moon, The Wooden Sea, and Sleeping in Flame.
I just wish I had more time to read. I'm anxious to hear your reaction to Carroll, Wabbit, as we seem to have similar tastes.

are you tempting me to buy EVEN more books? You are bad :D lol

Yeah, I will let you know what I think about it! Or if you are first then let me know what you think :)

I loved Wooden Sea - it absorbed me, made me think and I was sad that it ended.
Read him, you won't regret it :)

OK. So let's bring an old dead thread back to life. (I am going to try, at least.)

I have heard much about Mr. Carroll, and have read many of the plots to his books. They have intrigued me, obviously. However, according to Wikipedia, some of the books that I am interested in reading are parts of series. Going back and reading about the plots, it seems that the book really aren't connected. Wikipedia has "Kissing The Beehive", "The Marriage of Sticks", and "The Wooden Sea" as the three books making up "The Crane's View Trilogy".

So that leads me to ask, does one need to read these in order to get the whole story, even though it seems to the untrained that the books aren't related? Some of you previous posted that you enjoyed "The Wooden Sea". Did you read the two other books prior to it?
