Jurrasic Park

Stephen

I thought the film was great, but I've heard the book is much better, so I've picked up a copy of Jurrasic Park and Congo from The Works bookshop for only £1.99, for 2 books.

You heard correctly, the book IS much better. I read it before the film came out and was disappointed that there were so many changes made. It don't think the changes were necessary for it to be a good film, the story was great without the meddling. Of course there was much that was left out. The one thing that was discussed in great detail in the book but was only an aside in the movie was the Chaos Theory. I had seen a documentary program (NOVA maybe? Don't know if you have that program in the UK) on the theory a month or so before reading the book and thought the whole concept intriguing.

I don't want to say more . . . give it a read and let me know what you think.

I agree with Dawn. The book is very good - probably one of Crichton's best. Congo, the book, is also much better than its movie version though not as good as Jurassic Park.

You got a good deal for £1.99!

I'd like to see Crichton's Timeline made into a movie. Of course, I'd probably be disappointed.

Dawn,
They are filming Timeline as I write this:
Timeline (April 11th) - Based on the novel by Michael Crichton. A group of archeology students are shocked to discover that their professor has- through an experimental technology- traveled to 14th century France and now is trapped there. The students must mount a rescue attempt.
Stars: Paul Walker, Gerard Butler, Frances O'Connor

Awesome! Was disappointed to read that it's not being filmed on location in France.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Great news, I enjoyed the book and I think it'll make a good film.

To add to the question Stephen asked, Jurrasic Park is an excellent book. One of Crichton's best IMO.

So Stephen, how are you getting on with Jurassic Park?

I have'nt got round to read it yet. I bought it at the same time as a load of other books.

Plus I'm a slow reader;)

At the moment I have just started to read No Logo by Naomi Klein.

Other Michael Crichton adaptations -

The Andromeda Strain - an oldie but a goody, translated fairly accurately from page to screen

Disclosure - Michael Douglas and Demi Moore getting sexed up in this so-so thriller, its a firm adaptation of perhaps not his best novel

Rising Sun - Sean Connery!! Wesley Snipes!! Possibly one of the most unlikely combinations around - make a hash of the script but it comes through eventually, not a bad thriller

Sphere - a bad attempt at a very confusing story, didnt really relay itself well onto film - hard enough trying to get through the book with some understanding

The Thirteenth Warrior - adapted from Eaters of the Dead, with a changed title because Hollywood didnt like it, not a bad laugh if you're into Beowulf but not the most intelligent of movies

Prey has already been optioned and will probably be put into production soonish - Timeline is due out on November 26th, 2003, but this has already slipped from December 2002 & Summer 2003.

You should also check out Twister and Westworld which were both scripted by MC :)

Thats about it i think ;)

I seem to remember seeing Michael Crighton's name on the credits of ER (you know, the TV show). Do I remember this correctly, or am I mad?!

Cheers, Martin

Calm down, Martin. You're not mad. What's more, you've got a good memory. Michael Crichton's name is on ER credits.

Phil_t - you should add The Great Train Robbery to your list. There is an old film with Sean Connery based on this book. Pretty good and suspenseful, but I don't like that the film is made in such a manner that the bad guys (the main characters, of course) are to be liked. It's something like with the Three Musketeers.

Ahhh, you are correct - it was just that with so many versions of the story around i wasnt sure it was based on his book - i have seen the film and it was pretty good

Last and least ...

You also left out The Lost World, Crichton's title for Jurassic Park 2. Absolutely terrible how the so-called heroes are dumber than the so-called villians in the movie ... then Spielberg decides to place the TRex in San Diego for the fun of it--no respect for the book at all!

Timeline is being released November 26th, according to the official website.

Is the release date April 11th, 2004? I couldn't find it on the website. Did see some great pics though? This was my favorite Crichton book so I'm really looking forward to it.
