Killing Off Characters

I have recently discovered that George R R Martin is good at this and gets a LOT of mileage per death. Even if you don't like fantasy its good to read it and try to figure out how he did it.

He did kill of many characters (or atleast some) in A game of Thrones. And that book is VERY graphic. Not by blood by by other aspects. I need to find the rest of the series...
