I have read most of McMurtry's books and he is one of the authors that I enjoy reading. His Lonesome Dove, Terms of Endearnment, The Berrybender Saga, etc are all excellent reading. Lonesome Dove has to be my favorite of his books. One of his little known books though is one that I tremendously enjoyed. It is the book "Zeke and Ned. What is your favorite.
 
Lonesome Dove is the only one of his I've read but it instantly jumped into my all-time top ten. It was absolutely amazing! I was tempted to read some of the other ones in the series but I think I'll just leave it as it. It couldn't really get any better for me.
 
I love all of the Lonesome Dove series books. You care about his characters and feel like he is just telling you alone this amazing story.

I enjoyed the Lonsome Dove series. I read the first in the Berrybender series and didn't care enough to continue on the series.
 
ANOTHER McMURTRY SERIES

I read THE LAST PICTURE SHOW (SAW FILM TOO); DUANE'S DEPRESSED; TEXASVILLE.

I LOVED THEM ALL BUT WAS A BIT DISAPPOINTED IN TEXASVILLE.

THE LAST PICTURE SHOW IS A MASTERPIECE.

I just finished Lonesome Dove and Streets of Laredo. Both books were excellent, although I had a few problems with the sequel.

First I thought the main characters changed a great deal from the 1st book to the next.
Also didn't like the direction he went in with some main characters from the first book.

Don't want to say much more, because I may ruin it for someone who hasn't read the books.

Despite my problems with Streets, I enjoyed it greatly.

I'm about to start Dead Man's Walk. I hope it's as good as the other two.

The only other book by McMurtry that I've read was Buffalo Girls. I thought that was also an excellent book. Gave you a great look at some historical characters.
 
Larry McMurtry is certainly an icon in today's (and yesterday's ) writing community. The first book of his I read was THE LAST PICTURE SHOW which IMHO is a classic along w/ many of his other works. Then I read TEXASVILLE and DUANE'S DEPRESSED and enjoyed them thoroughly. I own LONESOME DOVE and hope to get to it one day soon.
 
He's one of my perennial favorites , and few writers exhibit the range and scope that he's capable of.

I've run across individuals that were/are absolutely amazed that Terms of Endearment and The Last Picture show came from the same pen that Lonesome Dove and it's adjuncts originated from.

There will come a day when he's remembered among the pantheon of great American writers.

Oh...Larry McMurtry...a man after my own heart. He is by far my favorite author, and penned my absolute favorite book, Lonesome Dove. I've read it 17 times (not joking), and I love it even more with every reading. Dead Man's Walk and Comanche Moon were good also, though I didn't enjoy Streets of Laredo as much.

I also love the movie Lonesome Dove, which I've seen about a billion times. I don't believe that the story could have been told better, or cast better for that matter. What a great story it is, and one that I will treasure forever.

Have you read the rest of his body of work? As I stated he shows amazing range. And I've always appreciated ( as a native Texan) how well researched the Lonesome Dove series was , he even gets the details of the Jornada del Muerte , Palo Duro canyon ( and the Comanche and Kiowa) and the Llano Estacado right , along with small details up towards the Red and Canadian.


Read his early stuff if you get the opportunity , as I remember " Horseman Pass By" was the very first published , The Last Picture Show was close to the begining of his career too , though there are a couple in between 'em.Cadillac Jack was a good read , and his latest stuff is the equal
" When The Light Goes" which continues the series that started with the Last Picture Show ( Texaville and Duane's Depressed being the others) and don't miss Roads: driving America's Great Highways........

I've read a few of his other books, and my husband is currently reading: The Colonel and Little Missie: Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley, and the Beginnings of Superstardom in America, which I'm very much looking forward to reading once he's finished.

I do love his style, and I will hopefully complete my Larry McMurtry collection within the next few months.

I didn't care for Endearment or Lonesome Dove very much, but LOVED Leaving Cheyenne and Cadillac Jack.

He's had an interesting trajectory. You go back to his first work, then his cool middle stuff, then the popular later stuff and it's almost like several different writers.
 
I wanted to add that I've recently acquired a copy of McMurtry's Moving On...and I'm looking forward to reading it. Any reviews?
 
I consider it REALLY boring. A couple of disaffected kids on the rodeo circuit. Where nothing really happens.

I use it as an example of a novel that doesn't fit the whole "three act, dramatic pyramid" model. Its arc is a pancake.

You want to read about young Texans, I'd say "Leaving Cheyenne"
