Have you read the rest of his body of work? As I stated he shows amazing range. And I've always appreciated ( as a native Texan) how well researched the Lonesome Dove series was , he even gets the details of the Jornada del Muerte , Palo Duro canyon ( and the Comanche and Kiowa) and the Llano Estacado right , along with small details up towards the Red and Canadian.
Read his early stuff if you get the opportunity , as I remember " Horseman Pass By" was the very first published , The Last Picture Show was close to the begining of his career too , though there are a couple in between 'em.Cadillac Jack was a good read , and his latest stuff is the equal
" When The Light Goes" which continues the series that started with the Last Picture Show ( Texaville and Duane's Depressed being the others) and don't miss Roads: driving America's Great Highways........
