Have you watched My Best Fiend yet? There's a lot of behind the scenes material from Fitzcarraldo. Kinski was a true madman on the set.

Have you watched My Best Fiend yet?

Not yet, but I'm getting around to it. Need to get through a pile of giallo films first.

Did find time to watch The Woods, though. Pretty much agree with lenny's earlier post about it; certainly not bad, it's got a nice Suspiria/Evil Dead thing going and it's certainly spooky and atmospheric, but it lacks punch. When a movie has The Bruce wielding an axe and it STILL doesn't make you want to go "Wooo!" there is something wrong. Lucky McKee has talent to spare (he's got a thing for lesbian outsiders, but I'm not really complaining about that bit) but this wasn't the movie I was hoping he'd make. Let's hope he gets to make a better movie soon... I'm sort of curious about Roman.

Excellent, I loves me some giallo. I think I've seen every one that has been released on Region 1 dvd, courtesy of Netflix. I think my faves have been What Have You Done to Solange and Don't Torture a Duckling. What a great genre.

The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause ~ Better than the second film, but still not as good as the original. I loved Jack Frost and thanks to pervy Martin Short fangirlism, I can't innocently watch that movie ever again.

You, Me, and Dupree. The first ten minutes or so were dull, but it got better along the way. Overall it was fun but not a movie that requires repeated viewings.

"John Tucker Must Die" I didn't rent it right away because I thought it would be corny, but I loved it. I loved it because it reminded me of a mixture of "Heathers" and "Bring It On". Weird mixture, but for some reason it works. The only thing that would have made it better is having Freddie Prinze, Jr. as the leading man.

Grindhouse

Just saw Grindhouse tonight! :D
I enjoyed it. 4 out of 5.
I really felt as though Tarantino forgot what kind of film he was making in the middle of "Death Proof." He just kind of gave in & just made it a regular Tarantino film. Zoe Bell was amazing in it! But otherwise, there was way too much talking in the beginning.

I think I liked "Planet Terror" as a whole more than "Death Proof" as a whole.
Hottest chick: Marley Shelton

Favorite trailer: Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving."

The Squid and the Whale on TV last night. I love Jeff Daniels' performance in this film. The rest of the cast give excellent performances as well.

caught the first hour of 'Killing me softly' last night with Heather Graham and Joseph Fiennes. Have to say it is one of the worst films i have ever watched! was basically just a soft porn movie!

Picked up a box set of all the classic Pink Panther movies (except, for some reason, Return of the Pink Panther which is perhaps the best of the bunch). In brief:

The Pink Panther: First and weakest of the "real" PP movies. Never quite decides if it's a David Niven vehicle or a Peter Sellers vehicle and flounders between the two - plus Clouseau really needs better sidekicks than he gets here. Some excellent comedy nonetheless, even if its age really shows. 3/5.

A Shot In The Dark: Now THIS is classic. Clouseau takes centre stage and Peter Sellers dominates from beginning to end, especially when he gets to play off Herbert Lom and Burt Kwouk. Nobody really cares about the case, and it's rapidly written off in the final scene - it's all about all the WRONG ways to catch a killer. By trying to disguise yourself in a nudist colony, for instance. 5/5.

The Pink Panther Strikes Again: Still a lot of fun, but sends up James Bond rather than detective stories and gets a bit too grand for its own good. But you gotta love a movie in which every secret service in the world band together to kill a single moron - and fail, miserably. Worst romantic subplot of the series, but a hoot. 4/5.

Revenge of the Pink Panther: This time Clouseau IS dead - everyone thinks, much to the elation of his enemies and co-workers (many of which are both). Except, of course, the killers screwed up and killed the wrong man and Clouseau has to investigate his own murder incognito. Oh lord. The jokes are wearing a bit thin at this point, but it's more "in character" than Strikes Again and hell, it's Sellers vs Lom again. 4/5.

Trail of the Pink Panther: This time, SELLERS is dead. So Blake Edwards cobbled together a movie from about 5 minutes of outtakes, a couple of flashbacks, and a plot centered around new characters that goes nowhere. Sellers' widow sued, and rightly so; this is graverobbing, and not even GOOD graverobbing. 1/5.

I've never watched the remake with Steve Martin, and I don't think I ever will. I grew up on these movies, and Trail (and its somewhat-less-awful sequel Curse of the Pink Panther) proved it enough: Clouseau is Peter Sellers. Period. The man may have been an asshole in real life, but man, was he ever funny.

He personified the 11th commandment: Thou shalt not give up.

Just came back from a friend's place, where we watched John Carpenter's Cigarette Burns. I quite enjoyed it, very scary premise that was in all likelihood ripped off from an older film, but I'm too lazy to check. Quite horrifically gory at the end, but I was hiding behind a tiny stuffed dog, so it's all good....

I saw Hot Fuzz yesterday. Really liked it. No SOTD, but it's nice to see anything from these boys.

I'm not sure I would say it's completely ripped off, but it reminded me a lot of one of his own - In The Mouth of Madness, one of my favourite Carpenter movies. Cigarette Burns is pretty damn good, though, best thing he's done in a long time.

I just watched Confetti. It made me all girly - sobbing and the like. How annoying for a semi-tomboy such as myself. It must be the gooey Jessica Stevenson/Martin Freeman/Olivia Colman/Robert Webb love (not all at once). Good to see all my lovelies in the one place for my viewing pleasure (I didn't anticipate seeing quite so much of Webb and Colman, but I won't complain).

Ugh, this post has made my use of the word 'love' on this forum rise by 700%. Highly recommend this film to any mocumentary fans.

Match Point. I was disappointed with Scarlett Johannsen's performance, but the rest of the cast (particularly Emily Mortimer and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) did great work.

Rented Closer and it was a royal waste. Libertine, promiscuous couples cheating with one another and playing out little dramatic scenes with their wronged boyfriends/girlfriends. Hideous movie, don't rent it or you'll regret it. If you like it, I will PM you to question your moral character.
