Prometheus. Probably the best movie Ridley Scott has done in years, which sadly isn't saying much after shit like Blackhawk Down and Robin Hood. As a horror/thriller movie it works fairly well, despite some really odd pacing and editing choices, and Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender do a great job with their roles. Unfortunately Scott also wants to try and turn it into some sort of 21st century 2001, and he just doesn't know how; the bits that aren't borrowed wholesale from the Alien series soon turn into a confused, inconsistent mess of von Dänikenian ancient astronauts and the oh-so-popular-these-days "science can't explain anything!" twaddle that makes me imagine a South Park-style "THIS IS WHAT RIDLEY SCOTT ACTUALLY BELIEVES" subtitle during half the movie. Worth watching, not a worthy addition to the Alien series (even if it does have the bonus of completely ignoring the far worse Alien vs Predator movies).

Saw this last weekend. It was entertaining and suspenseful. I liked it OK, but didn't understand some things. PM forthcoming.

Nice. This actually answers some of my questions better than BeerGood did, but it is not as funny. :lol:
I am left with the conclusion that Ridley Scott did not give me enough information to figure most of the movie out. And that is sort of irritating. Oh well. That's why he got smacked down by Madagascar.
 
War Horse.

Meh. The cinematography was great, and the story was a wonderful idea. The execution was lame, in my opinion. There were a few really neat scenes, but it was mostly ten minutes of set up for an obviously-coming tear jerk, then on to the next.
 
The People vs. George Lucas :star2:
It started off promising, but about an hour's worth of it was die-hard fans bitching about the changes to the special edition and their utter disappointment with The Phantom Menace. Watching that you would think that no one over the age of ten liked the movie. The only positive reaction came from little kids! I would have liked to have seen teenagers and adults who liked the movie being shown and not just the haters.

And if you're wonder whether or not I believe Star Wars belongs to the fans or to George Lucas, the answer is Lucas. He can do whatever the hell he wants with it! :p
 
Conquest. A baffling swords-and-sorcery film from horror maestro Lucio Fulci. Utterly no character development or sense of place whatsoever. Still, heads do get bashed in and limbs get torn apart. So there's that.
 
Re-watched True Romance for the first time in a very long time. You know, it's funny, but after seeing everything Tarantino has made after this, True Romance looks almost like a Tarantino ripoff; almost every scene feels like a dress rehearsal for something that would turn up in Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction or Jackie Brown. Still a fun movie on its own, though. :star4:

Also saw Once Were Warriors (yes, I'm on a 90s kick). That one wasn't fun at all. Absolutely brutal. :star5:
 
The Innkeepers - 7.5/10

An effective, atmospheric yet slow-burning paranormal flick with a penchant for drawing out scenes involving what/who might be otherwise fairly boring/mundane characters and circumstances. Yet, it does so in an effective manner, and delivers what I thought was a quality story with some effective and chilling (though rare) scenes of utmost creepiness.

I had read mostly bad reviews of this film, given from folks who had expected Saw or Hostel-type goings on, but am glad I rented this one out. At times as much a character study as anything. Directed by Ti West, whose other works I am not familiar with but will now definitely check out.

I liked The Innkeepers, though not as much as Ti West's previous movie House Of The Devil which is one of the best US horror movies I've seen in years - both thanks to and in spite of being a very deliberate pastiche of mid-70s (ie pre-Halloween) horror movies.

Nailbiter. Indie horror movie that looks promising at first, but ends up dull, unimaginative, and trying way too hard to shock with darkness and violence it has neither the budget nor the guts to actually show. Don't expect to hear from anyone involved again. :star1:

Paths Of Glory. Hadn't seen this in years, but after reading about Kubrick the other day I figured I'd rewatch it. Still a masterpiece with one of the most effective endings in Kubrick's career. :star5:
