Laugh Out Loud Funny

I've never read Hitchhiker's but I've never heard anything but praise for it. I guess it's time to buy a copy, eh?

I thought Robert Rankin's book, Nostradamos Ate My Hamster was pretty funny. And Dave Barry always puts me in creases.

Oh holy mother of God YES, please, please buy this book because you will cherish it for the rest of your life. I haven't heard of anyone, and I do mean anyone, not liking this book. This is an absolute comic gem. Classic, already.

Sure sounds funny. I'll check it out sometime! Thanks for that.

Cheers, Martin :D

Hannibal -- great choice! Winterdance was brilliant. It's one of the best books I've ever read -- insightful, exceedingly well-written and utterly hysterical.

Dawn -- Is that the same Roddy McDowell who was the actor? I wasn't aware he was an author as well, but it shouldn't surprise me. He had an agile mind and a quick wit. I'll have to see if I can find a copy.

My sincere apologies, Gryphon. It's Doyle, not McDowell. I made the mistake of asking my husband (thanks anyway, dear), since I couldn't remember the author.

The Van is part of the Barrytown Trilogy:
The Commitments (which spawned the movie)
The Snapper
The Van

The dialog in the book is written as spoken, so it can be a bit difficult to follow for a couple of pages, but well worth it.

Ah. Thanks for the clarification. I loved the film, The Commitments -- didn't know there was a book. So now I'll have to add three books to my list. :)

Sorry.. just never could get get into the Hitch-hikers series and I am a huge fan of British humor! I have tried reading it 3 times and just give up.

I love everything by Christopher Moore though and highly recommend Blood sucking Fiends as a first go or Coyote Blue.
Both are laugh out loud funny.

The Hitchhikers and Dirk Gently novels are all hilarious, the Discworld novels also. Robert Rankin is a true twisted genius, ive read most of his books and they are all great, if generally non-sensical :p

Tont Hawk's books are also a very funny read, my personal favorite being Playing the Moldovans at Tennis :)

Phil

Robert Rankin? Really? I always thought that was some kind of hardcore Sci-Fi writer. Shows how much I know. Is he in any way comparable to Douglas Adams? I hope so!

Tony hawk. Hmm... Isn't he some kind of skateboarder?

Cheers, Martin :D

Mebbe you were thinking of Ian Rankin?? (Then again, he writes crime novels, so maybe not!)

If anything his novels make even less sense that HhGttG, but they are all set in and around Brentford so they cant go too far wrong :D

Dont worry, i often get genres muddled on books i havnt read - no Rankin is pure oddball comedy, but well worth a look :)

Phil

Cool... gotta love oddball!! Have never heard of Ian Rankin though, so that surely wasn't where I went wrong.

Cheers, Martin :D

Well its probably because bookshops and libraries insist on putting authors like Robert Rankin in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy section :(

I think its about time they invented a 'funny books' section for authors like Rankin, Adams and Pratchett, with a disclaimer 'Warning, may contain Science Fiction and/or Fantasy themes, and God Forbid, possibly some violence and sex too' next to it :D

Rant over

Phil :)

I agree totally! The last bookshop I went into had Pratchett in the Science Fiction section!!

Same here... I mean, there is a world of difference between Douglas Adams and Greg Bear, isn't there?!

Cheers, Martin :D

Back to the point for a mo, histerical reads must include Kinski Uncut, by legendary german actor Klaus Kinski. A monumentally obscene, crazed diatribe of fruitcakeism. If you enjoy every second word being f**k and every other page some demented sexual encounter this is the book for you.

Any new recommendations? I mean HHGttG is kind of a "must read" when "funny" or "hilarious" is concerned.

My vote for most violent lough-out-loud is definitely "Riotous Assembly" by Tom Sharpe. Makes "Wilt" pale with envy in comparison.

Dave barry's "Big Trouble" (already mentioned) also made me draw angry stares from my neighbors at the pool.

For "OTT" one might want to check out Tim Dursey: "Florida Roadkill" and "Hammerhead Ranch Motel"

Aaarrggghhhh....you guys are listing too many authors whom I'm not yet aquainted with....my TBR list is just going to grow and grow I fear :)
