There seems to be a poularity surge at the moment with Teenage/Childrens horror with people like Darren Shan being heavily promoted. I agree, I think (generally) anything that gets folk reading at that age is a good thing and specifically Fantasy, Sci-fi and horror appeal to younger readers.
Having said that a good book's a good book and I've really enjoyed some books clearly aimed at younger readers, specifically Jonathon Stroud, Philip Pullman and I got a blast from the past when I picked up one by Rosemary Sutcliffe in a jumble sale.
