Looking for a good Medieval book....

I really liked the book Ash, she was a mercenary captain back in medieval days. I would love to read something else like that, I enjoy swords and bows so if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be grateful.
 
How historically accurate do you want it? Would you be interested in Medieval fantasy?

Recently read a couple of books that are part of a series, Wizardmont and Bryunzet, by Michael W. Lowe. They are fantasy with lots of action involving swords and magical bows! Waiting on his next book in the series.
 
Timeline

Not exactly classical HF, but Timeline is a great look at medieval life that really challenged some of the paradigms that were common (at least in my mind) about medieval combat when it was published. Yes, I do bump Crichton a lot -- but that's because I love his work!

The Queen's Man by Sharon Kay Penman is medieval and involves weapons, but it's not all sword-fighting, and there aren't any bows and arrows in it. But if you enjoy a good historical crime/detective story, this one really is recommendable.
 
Good Historical Fiction Suggestion - The Archer's Tale

I thought Bernard Cornwell's "The Archer's Tale", set in the medieval period, was a good, lively, historical fiction novel. A bit gritty in it's realism and gore but highly engaging. An educational journey back to 14th century France. Full of interesting details on the life and times and attitudes, as well as the hand to hand combat methods, of the period. Learned a lot.
 
some of the best medieval fiction I have read is by Sharan Newman, forgive me Sharan if I have spelled your name wrong, don't have one on my shelf right now. but these are a series of books about a young woman of hidden Jewish ancestry who is going to become a nun, then meets a young man who was also going for the holy life.... the 1st, I believe is Death Comes as Epiphany. the setting and the characters are so realistic for the time period, and the plots are well thought out. one realizes how rough life was back then!
 
thanks MaryJo, i had not come across Sharan Newman before now.. i like medieval style murder mysteries, and will add her to my list, along with Paul Doherty, Margaret Frazer, Susanna Gregory, Michael Jecks, Bernard Knight, Ellis Peters, Peter Tremayne.. just a few..

talking of.. loved Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth... worth a look. nice fat book too.
 
I really enjoyed Ariana Franklin's Mistress of the Art of Death novels. They are sort of 13th century CSI novels. Sadly, the writer has passed away, so there are only 4 books in the series, but they are all good.
 
If you don't mind time travelling being involved, go for "Doomsday Book" by Connie Willis. A great, intelligent, fun read about a modern-day visitor travelling into 1348 England.
