Looking for a Greek history suggestion.

I haven't been able to find a good detailed Greek History book. What I hope to find is one that is somewhere between a text book and a narrative.
I have tried the two below, but they are to brief on politics and war and to long on arts and literature. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ancient Greece: From Prehistoric to Hellenistic Times (Yale Nota Bene)
The Oxford History of Greece & the Hellenistic World (Paperback)

You should try The World of Athens: An Introduction to Classical Athenian Culture, which was published by Cambridge University Press, ISBN 0521267897. My boyfriend is a history major, and this is the book that influenced him in his choice.
