Looking for an autobiography to read

lance armstrong's its not about the bike(my journey back to life)

highly recommended even for those who are not really into sports...it covers in great detail his fight against cancer, even sperm banking before chemo, and best of all, his great comeback to cycling....modern american english, he described himself as bragadocious kid...

Perhaps Memoir?

Must be written in contemporary American English and narrated from his/her *personal* points of view...
There is a lot of overlap between autobiography and memoir. I recommend Russell Baker's Growing Up. He also wrote a second book (don't remember the title) which continues the story.

A new one...

Try reading The Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx...not for the faint-hearted, but no doubt an eye-opener.

Cheers

Scar tissue

Scar Tissue is a great read. Anthony Kiedis the chilli pepper frontman writes about drugs, women, sex and his childhood. Its amazing how many times he relapsed after he vowed he would stop. The most amazing thing is how he was clean for five years, but after a dentist gave him Morphine he went and got loaded and that started the chain all over. I bought Eric Claptons Autobiography a couple of days ago, i am yet to begin because i was reading Scar Tissue, it should be a intresting read. My final recomendation is 'The Wolf of Wall Street, the book is written by Jordan Belfort, he tells of his drug addiction and how he would rake in so much money and blow it just as quickly, you should enjoy that book aswell.

Ben Franklin

It's not exactly contemporary, although the writing style is perfectly fine; if you haven't already read it, I think Ben Franklin's autobiography should be on everyone's required-reading list.

A bit dated from the 80's, but check out Tip O'Neill's Man ofthe House. O'Neill tells a lot of great down home political stories that you'll never forget. His stories about the Kennedys, Reagan, not to mention interesting characters in the House/Senate is not to be missed.

I absolutely love Esmeralda Santiago's memoirs.

When I was Puerto Rican

Almost a Woman

The Turkish Lover

I read the first one for an international lit. class. It talks about Santiago's life growing up in poverty in rural Puerto Rico. Towards the end she emigrates to the U.S. The second book is about her life in the U.S. during her teengae years and the third book is about her love affair at a young age with a turkish filmmaker Ulvi Dogan.

She's currently working on another memoir to pick up after the last and I will definitely be picking it up once it's published. :)

Baa Baa Black Sheep by Gregory Boyington. Just finished this one. The beginning is a little slow, but once you get into it it's really good. Really good book.

Not Without My Daughter by Betty Mahmoody isn't too bad. It's about a woman who marries an Iranian man. They visit Iran, but he doesn't let her leave. He's pretty abusive, but something tells me that perhaps she might've been exaggerating a tiny bit. Don't give into the temptation to see the movie afterwards, it's a misrepresented Sally Field sapfest.

reading Wolf on Wall Street currently and cant put it down. The fast life and drugs that he vividly describes are one thing, but the detailed strategy of how he made millions of dollars weekly using the pump and dump strategy with his investment banking firm are amazing. truly a page turner.

heard rumors of a movie in the works. directed by scorcese, written by the sopranos writer and lead role by dicaprio.
