Looking for book suggestions

Hi I'm looking for books that have a strong female character as it's main. I'm hoping to find something in the lines of fantasy or the supernatural. But will not be restricted to just those areas.

Check out the Luna line of books. Strong female characters in a speculative fiction setting. I definitely recommend Mercedes Lackey's Hundred Kingdom's series, C. E. Murphy's series that starts with Urban Shaman, Maria V. Snyder's Study series, Robin Owen's series that starts with Guardian of Honor... I haven't found a book yet from Luna that I didn't love.

Also, Elizabeth Haydon's Rhapsody series, Holly Lisle's Talyn, Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel books, S.L. Viehl's StarDoc series...

I read Seraphim by Michele Hauf a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it. Definitely a strong main female character and it's fantasy, too.

The Anita Blake books fit but they aren't exactly great literature. They aren't bad if you like to just read some entertaining trash every now and again atleast up to around book 7 or 8 where the series turns into hardcore porn.

You might also want to try the Thursday Next books by Jasper Fforde. i've only read the first, the Eyre Affair. It's not exactly fantasy, but Fforde's world definitely is not the same as ours, and there are elements of the supernatural

I just had another idea for you. The Ruins of Ambrai by Melanie Rawn is fantastic if you want strong females. The series is set in a matriarchal society, so there are a lot of strong women characters. This is the first in her Exiles fantasy series and they're really good.

i dont know if youve read garth nix or not...his books are more directed to youth but i still found them enjoyable, and they are some of my favorites. The Keys to the Kingdom series is fantastic, though ive never read the Abhorsen trilogy-its supposed to be AMAZING...hmm...i should put it on my list. dont know much about it though. The Keys to the Kingdom has a really neat twist to things, w/ the 7 days of the week and the & deadly sins...lots stuff woven together. though i might add that the main character is a boy, in the books, there are two strong female characters involved, one the more so in books 3-4.

Tamora Pierce.

Almost all of her quartets are female-based. In her smaller series she has two books (both in separate quartets) that are from the perspective of a boy. But all of them are strongly centered around females. One series is largely medieval (Tortall) with knights and magic, while the other is more of a menagerie, but even more based around magic. Very fantasy.

If you start with Tortall, the best quartet to begin with is Song of the Lioness. And the other series starts with the Circle of Magic quartet.

Gate to Women's Country

I particularly like this one, by Sheri Tepper, who someone mentioned earlier. It's set in a post-apocalyptic society, good story, and great female characters.

I liked this one:
Friday by Robert A. Heinlein
It is definitely a fantasy, and definitely has a strong female character.
If you like Heinlein you'll like it.

The Anita Blake books fit but they aren't exactly great literature. They aren't bad if you like to just read some entertaining trash every now and again atleast up to around book 7 or 8 where the series turns into hardcore porn.
Haha, thats what I thought as well when I was reading that series. It was great action, and entertaining until about that area of the series. I don't mind a little porn, but it turned from action with little sex; too lots of sex with little of anything else...I enjoyed for the fact the setting of the book was based on real places in Missouri, inwhich I live :)

Dances with wolves (not sure if you've seen the movie), but the book is excellent. The main character is Dances with wolves, but the women in the story is a very strong character! She in the book just as much at Dances with Wolves! Very good book and I strongly recommend it!

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant is about a family of strong women.

I would also recommend the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich for more light-hearted, fun books about a strong--or perhaps headstrong--female. They're hilarious.

Neither of these suggestions are fantasy books, however. But I would definitely second the suggestion of Elizabeth Haydon's novels. They are absolutely wonderful!
