Looking for Children's book from my childhood

I am trying to find books (from the late 1970s) which were in our house when I was growing up, so I can share them with my young kids. I am stuck on remembering a title for a very short softcover story about a girl who discovers a monster living in the cellar in her house. I don't know why, but the name Harriet springs to mind, this might be either the author or the girl in the story. Anyway, the story is very short, and consists pretty much of the girl trying to make the monster leave. She can't get her mom to believe what she is seeing down there, and at some point she pops the monster with a broom several times until he is a very tiny, tiny little monster. I don't remember what happens after that but it was funny, not a scary book at all. There might have been more than one monster though. I also remember the illustrations and cover being orange on white pretty much the whole story. If anyone can recall the title so I can start looking around I'd appreciate it. I thought it was Lamont the Lonely Monster, but that was another book I used to have where I confused the title with this story.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
AC
