The first one was a historical romance. It was set around 1066 in England. I remember the first part when the invading army attacked a convent. Inside was a woman who had sought refuge from the war, but wasn't a nun. She was sewing a wimple when the fellas crashed though her door. The head man of the Army stole her for himself, but didn't ravish her. She cooked porrige for breakfast (maybe this means it was a Scottish army?) and didn't wash the pan straight away. Anyways. The woman travels with the army, still not being ravished until they go back to the head mans home. The woman and the man fall in love of course. War returns and the man goes back to war. I recall that he wore harlequin pants when he married her.
The other book starts in America, about 1914, with the 'daughter' coming back home in a carriage, in disgrace, after giving birth to an illegitimate baby. The first chapter ends, if I recall correctly, with the daughters mother pulling the shades down, and them never being lifted again. It then skips to the 1940s or so when the illegitimate baby has grown up and is expecting her third child, but her husband has died. The 'hero' of the story has just gotten out of jail [Sing Sing?] and came to her town, where he goes to a cafe/diner and asks to read the paper. He sees a want ad for a husband [maybe it was a yardsman] and to apply at the ladies house [Rock Creek Road rings a bell] asks the cafe owner where to find the place and sets off. He applies for the job, and ends up sleeping in the barn. Once again, they end up falling in love, he delivers her baby, and they get married - not necessarily in that order. The babies name was Lizzie. He gets set up for the murder of another woman and his wife learns to drive the 'junker' he put together and goes to his trials.
I never saw the title of the second book, as it was given to me by a friend. Any help would be great, coz I would love to read these again.
cheers,
Monique
