Magician: Pug and the Games Arena (possible spoilers)

If you havent read Magician and intend to, this thread contains spoilers.

I think the "scene" (for want of a better word) in which Pug destroys the Tsurani Games arena in Magician is the most amazing passage in any Fantasy book, ever.

What do you think of this "scene"?

I think it is definately one of the greatest "scenes". It came as great relief for me, as I was sure Pug was lost to the world of the Great Ones. Looking back, it seems foolish to have doubted his return to glory.

I was terrible annoyed that Puc decided to stay a great one, if that scene wouldn't have happend I think I would have stopped reading

Another great "scene" is in Magicians sequel, Silverthorn where Father Nathan Destroys the undead Mordehel after the High Preistess of Limis-Kragma tried to call it's soul back from the dead.

That was great too. Father Nathan was just so calm and cool about it.

Me too, but you have to remember that Pug would have never found his power if it wasn't for his time on Kelewan, or more to the point, his time with with the assembly but I was glad that he realised that he couldn't be a Tsurani Great One.

what i liked most about the scene was that the shere power and ferociousness of pug's magic when he lost his temper is so graphicaly detailed.
It is the definative "Wizard in a bad mood" scene.

I just read Magician again the other day.

Personally it seemed kind of un-Pug-like for him to lose his temper and get spectators killed - but not liking what was going on was totally in character.

it was totally in character as, to pug, the spectators were not innocent bystanders as you put it becuase they were reviling in the blood and gore of the participants

There are some scenes that are so well described, the images they depict are almost life like in the mind. The games was definitely one for me, Pug on the tower becoming a Great One was another.

As a kid, Tolkien's ringwraiths had this effect on me, and still create great atmosphere for me even today. The flight to the ford near rivendell with the ringwraiths chasing, the prancing pony attempted assassination in bree - I love those Nazgul.

those scenes you describe Self, are what i look for in the books i read, the scenes where you are pulled in. If their are more than onbe in a book i generally don't end up sleeping but i feel just as rested as if i had.

Books with those kinds of scenes will keep me up nights as well. I will read it over and over, picturing it in my mind. Those scenes are what make reading worth it.

Short of risking a threadjacking, it would be interesting to hear from others about their favourite vivid scenes from other books perhaps?
