McCain picks VP

John McCain announced his VP running mate as Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

I guess McCain is trying to say he is the right choice for women voters by selecting a women running mate? I bet Obama is kicking himself for not choosing Hillary?

Is she the gov who had a baby while in office and had some people's undies in a bundle for daring to mix motherhood and such a high-toned job?

Strategically, it was a brilliant move, yes.....but my take on it is that now people are going to question his reasons. He was bad mouthing Obama for being inexperienced. How is she any better? (This is just my opinion, I'm a huge Obama supporter)

Of course they'll question his reasons.. just as I'd hope they'd question Obama's. At any rate, this will be a great race to watch!

Great. She's a creationist.:banghead6mx::banghead6mx: And she favours hunting wolves. Bloody woman.

Why didn't McCain just pick Ann Coulter and be done with it? it'd make every bit as much sense.

Hi there Abc! Yes, Palin gave birth a few months ago to a baby with Down's syndrome and went back to work (as governor) 3 days after giving birth. Palin has 5 children.

Yes, McCain's biggest objection against Obama was his lack of experience and now McCain can't use that argument anymore. Personally, I don't believe Palin has the experience to become president if McCain died in office, since she has only been governor for 2 years and was mayor of a small town before that.

However, Palin will get votes for McCain because she is a woman, and a pretty one at that (former beauty queen), she is pro-life, religious, has power in Alaska where McCain wants to drill for oil and Palin has an extremely high approval rating in her state. So, for those reasons I think it was a brilliant strategic move.

Personally, I won't change my vote to McCain because he has a female running mate. I don't think many women would change their vote. Women aren't going to vote for someone just because they're a woman. Hillary is proof of that. However, I do believe it is the smartest move he has made to date, but that doesn't change my views regarding having him as a president.

I think Obama's big positive is his lack of experience... less time to be corrupted by big governement.

I think you're right. While the selection is a bright move, I doubt it will sway women voters too much. By this stage of the game, most of us have already decided whether we're pro-choice or pro-life..for instance. It will be interesting to learn more about the character of this candidate.

As for her lack of experience vs Obama's.. if his lack is a postive, surely hers can't hurt either. What's that about what's good for the goose? Anyway, she's not likely to be forced to 'run the country' if McCain wins, and He definately will be running it if he wins.

Should be fun to see what shakes out.

Well, he is 72 and has been through a lot. It's not completely unlikely that his VP will get some extra work if he wins.

Maybe, but why would it be a bad thing if she did, and not be a bad thing for Obama? For people looking for something other than politics as usual, perhaps neither candidate's inexperience is the crucial deterent.

I suppose, though you might argue there's a difference between city or state politics and nationwide (at least, that's what Obama's camp are saying right now...) But yeah, it's not like all that experience helped the current president much. :whistling: And it does seem like a pretty smart move; she's already praising Hillary Clinton and talking about female empowerment. If nothing else, I guess she's certainly going to bring a different flavour to McCain's campaign.

Well, duh; obviously Paley is a lot hotter than Coulter.

I remember when Bush's father picked Dan Quayle and we were told that Quayle would attract female voters because he was young and handsome. Bah!

Palin may be gifted, but her ideology is terrible and she has little experience to qualify her to take over the presidency. And Hillary supporters (pro-choice women who want to end the war and climate change and who are not creationists) are expected to be delighted with her X chromosome and vote for her?

I think the choice is strictly done to pander to women voters, more specifically, the Hillary voters who aren't so thrilled about Obama. At the same time, McCain and the GOP don't realize that Hilary's supporters cast their ballots based on issues, not gender. It is very insulting to think they can win over the female Hillary vote by putting a woman on the ticket, one who is minimally qualified at that.

She does shore up the conservative base, something which he needed to do. Gary Bauer, James Dobson, and other leaders of the religious right have praised the move, so in that regard, it was a good move.
