Modern fantasy

Im looking for books that have a modern(present time) setting that deals with scifi or fantasy. I remember reading about a book a while ago about a magic user in downtown newyork wreaking havok and whatnot.

You probably want some Weaveworld or Imajica from Clive Barker. In fact, his The Great And Secret Show is probably the one you are really after.

Try Charles Stross's books The Atrocity Archives and The Jennifer Morgue. Not quite present day, maybe a few years into the future, but good nevertheless.

For modern fantasy I'm going to go ahead and recommend Neil Gaiman. In particular American Gods, Anansi Boys, and Neverwhere.

For "modern" SciFi, I'd check out William Gibson's last two: Pattern Recognition and Spook Country. Also look into Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. Of course there's always Michael Crichton.

Charles de Lint is considered to be the father of "urban fantasy". I've never read his books before but he seems to be quite popular among critics and fantasy fans.

Mark Chadbourn has written an excellent modern fantasy trilogy set in modern day Britain with Arthurian undertones. The Age Of Misrule: World's End/Darkest Hour/Always Forever. When Jack Churchill and Ruth Gallagher encounter a terrifying,mis-shapen giant under a London bridge they are plunged into a mystery which portends the end of the world as we know it. All over the country the ancient Gods of Celtic myth are returning to the land from which they were banished millenia ago. Following in their footsteps are creatures of folklore: fabulous beasts, wonders and dark terrors. As technology starts to fail Jack and Ruth are forced to embark on a desperate quest for four magical items-the last chance for humanity in the face of powers barely comprehended.

I lapped these up,and a trilogy sequel too. :)
