Murder mystery set in rural English village

Hi there,

I'm looking for the title of a book I read a while ago and loved. I want to read it again, but - doh! - I can't remember the title or the author.

It's basically a murder mystery set in a rural English village. A university professor goes to a village for reasons I can't quite remember. He stays with the local vicar who is quite young and also a bit odd.

The main details I can remember from the book are that the local village church is being renovated and that a body is found in the walls of the church. Also I recall that the local vicar turns out to be gay and that he and his partner (I think) killed an old man/woman.

Sorry... this seems even vaguer (and more of a long shot) than I thought now that I see it written down!

Thanks for looking and all help is greatly appreciated :)

Chris.
