My Amazon Kindle review....finally!

I believe I read that he made the purchase while in the states and then went overseas. You can only order the Kindle with U.S. credit cards

The credit card I used is attached to a US address. I was overseas when the Kindle was delivered to me but I work at a US Embassy so while I live here in Cambodia, I have a US based mailing address. It is one of our little perks. So as far as Amazon was concerned I was using a US based credit card and they were shipping to a US address.

The address linked to the credit card is the real sticking point for most non-USAers. The Kindle itself you can probably find on ebay or have a stateside friend ship it to you. But to purchase ebooks from Amazon you will have to have that credit card.

Amazon is working toward a broader release.

Thank you for these reviews on the kindle. I think that it's interesting and I'd be willing to try it out; except the price stops me from doing so.

No matter what, though, I don't think I could every give up reading "paper" books. I like books and the covers. I still read a newspaper...and get some stories online as well. So I imagine, one day in the distant future, I'll use both. I like the idea of being able to carry a book in my purse...for those in case moments were I'm bored.

This little gadget fascinates me. I'm going to think on getting one for the family for Christmas. My only concern is, how do three voracious readers share one kindle. I see lots of arguements over who's turn it is.

HAHAHAHAHA! Good luck with the sharing:lol:

No joke. I love my fiancé. I would take a bullet for her. If she needed a new heart I would tell the doctors to take mine. I would do anything for her...except share my Kindle.

Yep, That's pretty much it.

If there was a fire in the house, I'd yell for the kids to run, grab the dogs and my kindle.

I've decided I'm going to get my hubby a Kindle for Christmas as a nice surprise. You guys have convinced me that my husband might really enjoy this gift.

Does anyone have magazine subscriptions on their Kindle and if so, how do you like to read magazines on the device?

I haven't really been interested in magazines in print. I use my Kindle for books only. I think you should buy one for yourself, while you're at it. Once his arrives, you'll be wanting one too.

Can't help you there, Revised, I have only read novels on it and love it for that. With regards to magazines do keep in mind that photo depiction on the Kindle is not its strong point. So if the magazines you want to read on it are not heavy on graphics it will probably do just fine.

I just have to add, My DH just nearly gave me a stroke. He decided to top off my coffee right over my Kindle just now!

A drop of coffee hit the table an inch from my beloved!:banghead6mx:

I would probably only add Newsweek magazine or the Wall Street Journal as a nice surprise for him.

I just spilled tea on my book. It still works perfectly. Aaah, the wonders of technology... ;)

Ahh yes, one of the few downsides to the Kindle: living in utter and all encompassing terror. :)

I have a feeling my Kindle is a bit hardier than I give it credit for. I don't think it is a very rational concern because I don't worry as much about my laptop which is worth about 5 times as much as my Kindle and what is on my laptop would be far more difficult and expensive to replace than what is on my Kindle.

I looooove my Kindle. I got it on December 2007. I take it everywhere and have hundreds of books on it already. I also enjoying reading "real" books whenever I cannot get them on the Kindle, however, but I don't buy them, I get them at the library (Night/Dawn/Accident may be an exception, though, I really want to own that). The Kindle also got me reading on the computer using Mobipocket Reader and now I do a lot of reading on it.

Well I'm convinced..to heck with the kids and Christmas, I'm buying one for myself in January for my birthday.:D

What is Mobipocket and how does it work with the Kindle?

Well the two are not directly related. Kindle accepts Mobipocket books so I get a bunch of Mobipocket books (free domain) that the Kindle reads (.prc file extension) and I read them on the PC software (mobipocket.com). I also use Mobipocket Reader to create free newspapers for the Kindle. I made a guide at

How to quickly and easily create newspapers, magazines, and blogs for your Kindle. - MobileRead Forums

I've found EVERY SINGLE newspaper and magazine other than Reader's Digest available for free (legally) using my guide, and I've found every blog I've searched so far.

Everyone who owns a Kindle should have Mobipocket Reader and Creator :D (two different programs available for free at mobipocket.com).

P.S. Is this the coolest thing ever or what? I pasted the link and this forum parsed the title from it! I'd never seen that done before!

Am I understanding you correctly that Mobipocket books are free when you put them on your Kindle? It's awesome that you have found free newspapers and magazines for your kindle too! Thanks for the info.
