hello,
i want to impose on your creativity and poach an idea. my hubby is going to open his own IT business, sales, service, web design, servers, intranets, etc etc etc. as many of you may know and as dire straits pointed out, i had help signing up to the forum. when it comes to computers i am about as stunned as me arse.
the names i keep coming up with sound like catering companies or hookers for hire.
so any suggestions for a computer service co?

Hey, this isn't IT you know, you shouldn't have any problems coming up with a name! :)

Use the fact that tech stuff bamboozles you to come up with a great name! Like Web-o-matic'R'Us.

As a consultant? Have a look at some of the web design agencies in London - the name doesn't have to reflect the industry. It would be better if it fit its character. Word choice is also important, as you know, so try and stick to something upbeat, short, and optimistic - one word that springs to mind is fresh.

Jenn:

I have no idea about names, but I would love to hear more about what his direct plans are. Is he doing this on the side, or is he quitting his regular job to strike out on his own? Will he have employees, or is he flying solo?

Is he legally starting a business? Incorporating? Working out of home, or renting an office? What's his target market? Private or corporate? Who does he want to cater his business to? That kind of thing might help generate ideas for names. Plus I'm damn nosey about this kind of thing.

I'm intrigued and hope you keep us posted.

Details my lady. I want details.

jenn,

What kind of image do you want? Why don't you write a list of word ideas that you want to be part of your image?

Like:

Solid
reliable
knowledge rich
experienced
established

Let's name that one Castlegate Inc.

Or
zippy
cool
trendy
cutting edge
new
specializes in (Linux, XML, etc)

Let's name that one Zipperhead Tech

Or
international
flexible
effective communicator
generalized expertise

Let's name that one WorldWired

After you do that, it'll be much easier to decide on a name.

ok little more info. matt is a mcse cca cna and a+.
he has been working for a company for about 6 years now and is the IT dept. he has outgrown the position and is BORED!!!!! we were considering moving to halifax, he was offered a job there, but for a number of reasons we just didn't want to move. while all this was going on, his boss approached him and said," look i know you are bored, and over qualified for this job. i would be willing to front you some money to strike out on your own." this is very generous of him, and saavy as he cuts matt's position but still maintains matt as comp support. matt has also been doing some work for a friend who has recently purchased a franchise from WSI, a web company. tracy has agreed to sign matt 50% of his corp, in exchange for matt helping him build up his clientele. so we would avoid the hassle of becoming incorp. on our own. matt would head the sister branch of the co. which would focus on service and support all the while letting people know about the solutions available to them through WSI.
where we live is small and there are currently only 3 other firms that would offer any real competition.
intitially he plans to work out of the house. his partner happens to be a chartered accountant so he has all manner of interesting things up his sleeve, similar to the suggestions in rich dad poor dad.
we figure if matt's boss will front us enough cash to live bare bones of life for one year we will be able to do this.
we went back and forth for weeks with what to do. both of us come from family business' so neither of us have and illusions about how hard this is going to be. but we may never have this opportunity with so many things in place again and so much support.

some words that describe matt/what he wants to convey

versatile
outside the box
integrated
answers/solutions
evolving
dependable

That must mean something, but I don't know what. Maybe it loses something in the translation?!

microsoft certified systems engineer, a plus certification, citrix certified administrator and certified novell administrator

I'm probably not going to be much help, but here's what I learned when researching starting my business. You want a name that says what you do (stewart and moto had some good ones), is short, and memorable.

Unless the bite's so big only the core remains, you may have to change your logo in case a cease and desist letter comes along from a particularly fruity company.
