Need help finding a childhood book!

In 2nd to 5th grade there was a particular series of "children's thrillers" that I'm desperately trying to find again. Me, being out of highschool now, has no recollection of the name of the book or the author.

These "thrillers" were usually short stories or poems with amazing, pen and ink illustrations. To describe the illustrations they were: thin, thread-like, grotesque, and surreal. I wish I could provide more detail, but this is all I know.

I remember the cover of the books were usually white with black text. I know someone out there MUST know.

That was the first thing I thought when you mentioned that. Most of the kids I went to school with were near-illiterate hicks, but that was the one thing we could get everyone to read out loud. I still remember a few of the stories, and they were creepy. (So, naturally, I loved them!)

Thank you guys! This is exactly what I was looking for. Wow, just looking at that picture brings back memories.:) The illustrations are amazing!
