Good point, but maybe Dumbledore distrusts Snape with the position even more than he does Umbrige.

What I meant by this was maybe Dumbledore thinks Snape will get caught up in the Dark Arts again or something by taking the position. Maybe Dumbledore thinks he will use the position for bad means with out even intending it.

By teaching illegal curses like Moody and placing the studentst under them? Maybe Dumbledore feels that Snape does not know enough about the LEGAL Dark Arts and therefore is just not well suited for the job. Or that the position will bring back even more memories from Snapes past and waiver his loyalties.

But snape has an amazing knowledge of the dark arts therefore would know how to defend against it so he would seem like a prime candidate for the job

Its this "amazing knowledge" that makes him seem a sinister character and maybe not the best candidate for The Defence Against The Dark Arts position.
