Nicholas and the Buccaneers?

Im looking for the name of an old series of children's books, centred around a character called Nicholas. I'm looking for my girlfriend, but all she can remember is that the main character, a young boy, went into a painting (or something like that) and then had adventures on the pirate ship depicted there. She thinks there were several books in the series.

Any ideas anyone??
