I've also read the book after I saw the film. I loved both. It's a wonderful. I especially like the idea of old Noah and his notebook, as he is reading it to his wife over and over again.
The Notebook was based on a true story so maybe that is why I liked it more than his other books.
To me, it's Sparks's best book ... his later works often were too kitschy
I saw the movie first and loved it, so I figured I would like the book. I was wrong - I hated the book because it seemed so shallow compared to the movie. This doesn't happen all that often, where the movie is better than the book, but I thought the actors did such a great job with the characters in the movie. When I sat down to read the book I was expecting the same thing and they just didn't measure up. Sorry...

I loved the book. I read a few other books by Sparks but I didn't like them because they seemed too trite and/or unbelievable to me. The Notebook was based on a true story so maybe that is why I liked it more than his other books.
I have not found any info that The Notebook was based on a true story,
The Notebook was based upon the lives of Nicholas Sparks wife's grandparents.
