Nicholas Sparks

Everything we might say, Ebert said way better

I shall quote famed critic Roger Ebert in his review of "the Last Song"

"To be sure, I resent the sacrilege Nicholas Sparks commits by mentioning himself in the same sentence as Cormac McCarthy. I would not even allow him to say "Hello, bookstore? This is Nicholas Sparks. Could you send over the new Cormac McCarthy novel?" He should show respect by ordering anonymously."

Zing.

Ebert also writes

"Sparks recently went on record as saying he is a greater novelist than Cormac McCarthy. This is true in the same sense that I am a better novelist than William Shakespeare. Sparks also said his novels are like Greek Tragedies. This may actually be true. I can't check it out because, tragically, no really bad Greek tragedies have survived."

I used to read every book Nicholas Sparks wrote!

Now, all I have to do is read the back of the book and I know exactly what happens! I wouldn't read any more of his books!

I can't comment on who is the better author out of Cormac McCarthy as I haven't read The Road or seen the movie, but I don't think either would be in the league of Charles Dickens or Shakespeare!

i love nicholas sparks' books though some of them are not a happy ending like "the choice" and "dear john ".. still , i am buying his books ..
:D

Thanks for posting this, Anamnesis!

I read that interview not long ago, and umm... yikes. I wonder if he realizes how horrible he comes off. He doesn't write romance, but love stories? No one does what he does? His favorite novel is one of his own? F'ing A, he's got to be kidding, right? Sad thing is, he's not. ::shudders::  I'm not even gonna touch on how he feels about McCarthy. He's so ridiculous.

In which the author explains why his books aren't romance and dismisses Cormac McCarthy as "pulpy" and "horrible".

Fire away!

I like his books because he is one of the few authors who doesn't think that every other word they write has to be a curse word. That probably makes me a fuddy duddy but so be it.

He must have thought that James Patterson was bad,if he kept his mouth closed. I know Patterson isn't one of the greatest author's ever, but he's better than Sparks. Any Alex Cross novel of Patterson's beats anything Sparks has.

We'll see who has the #1 book in a few days, which will be Deaver with his The Burning Wire.

I bet they asked him questions about other authors like Koontz,Patterson,Connelly etc.

I've read a couple of Alex Cross books and wasn't impressed. I didn't like Alex Cross and James Patterson's fiction doesn't do anything for me. I did like the book on the murder of King Tut but that is because I'm interested in Egyptian history. Actually I'll take anything by Jim Butcher to James Patterson. Sorry.

I've never read any Sparks nor would I. But I bought a Patterson to see what all the hype was about. It was shockingly bad, i only made it about 20 pages in. It was one of the Daniel X books.

The first book of the Alex Cross series is good, but after that the fun just starts to deteriorate.

I've only read Butcher's Dresden Files(book 9 currently). I'm not a fan of fantasy, which is why I don't read his other stuff. The Dresden Files are pretty damn good(my favorite series). Although I would recommend the first book of Alex Cross, Along Came The Spider. It was not one of my favorite books of all time, but it's good. But check out from a library. It's not worth a buy.

I have read A Walk to Remember because everyone was telling me that I should read it. After that, I never read another Spark's book...
