Odd Amazon Recommendations

I saw this in my inbox and it made me wonder if anyone else has received odd recommendations from Amazon.



OK, I have purchased photography books and I have purchased cookbooks but that doesn't mean I want books on how to photograph food.

I keep getting recommendations from Borders of books that I already own. The amusing thing is that I usually get recommended the same three authors every time: Tolkien, Juliet Marillier, and Terry Pratchett.

I bought a notebook computer from Amazon and it keeps recommending some other notebooks I might be interested in.

Apparently so.

Here's another odd recommendation: I bought Lonely Planet Russia and Belarus from amazon.de and they thought I might be interested in Russian Foreign Policy between Security and Economics: Exporting Gas and Arms to Belarus and China 1990-2008.

What I've learned from my unsolicited recommendations on Amazon is that they aren't shy about stocking and promoting smut. I think it's because I bought one of Lenny's reviewed books, for which I thank him nonetheless.

Since I never know what's going to confront me when I open my Amazon page, I have to be careful about who's looking over my shoulder.

A small part of me would read Master, but a greater part of me would be disgusted by the fact that someone wrote an erotic novel of my favorite Dumas book.

Off-topic, but slightly related... I bought some cold & sinus medication at the local pharmacy a few years back and got an email form them a week later asking if I was feeling better.

Non-book related but still relevant: even though I very recently bought a Canon 50D and a lens, Amazon continues to send me emails on DSLRs I may be interested in.

J have had no problems or weirdness with amazon. Quite the contrary, they impress me no end with their selection, especially including their Marketplace, and their service, including their returns policy. And that they (their computer) think me interested in buying more books on a topic/genre that I have already shown an interest in does not strike me as weird.

Sometimes the suggestions are funny, since they're based on Mr Abc's browsing history too. I never know if I'll be offered books about cooking, history, biography, genealogy, timber framing, frugal living, or living off the grid. And that's just for starters. Since I looked up an old album by Linda Ronstadt just now, they think they'll entice me to buy every album she's ever made. Add in various searches for grocery/kitchen/computer/and God know what else.. and they're offerings can be very interesting indeed. I don't worry too much. I've gotten some good suggestions, specially with their 'people who looked at this book also bought' feature.

They figured it out through her spending habits. Feminine stuff went away, and prenatal tablets came aboard!
