I could throw my Mini at you - would that help?
:D That was my first smile today:

I just decided that I'll buy exactly 2 presents (a book for my granny and something for my little sister) and nothing else.

"Merry Christams and a very happy new year to you, mr michel!" :D :D in mexico.

"Merry Christmas, Gizmo!!"
:D :D
aye... cheers! :p

(is it too early? anyway. )

Aren't I nice. I had already gone to sleep after I helped to decorate the trees outside. ----(It was snowing! my hands got frozen when decorated those star bulbs, and that was why I went to sleep earlier today.)---a bit confusion.

Goodnight, peopple.

Gizmo, tell all your friends and family that in light of international suffering you have decided not to give cards or presents this year and instead are going to donate money to charity. This way you will feel really good about yourself and everyone will think you are a nice person. Then buy yourself a nice jacket.

or better yet, make up an charity institution, then print some donation receipts, and give those as gifts saying that you have donated some money on the persons behalf. (if posible ask people to donate more money, which you happily would deliver to said institution)

That's good! And stand outside churches with a collecting bucket (say it's for orphans or donkeys or pussy cats). Never mind a jacket you'll be able to buy a whole new wardrobe.

Feliz navidad y Hasta luego :)

Christmas is the time for giving, so give of yourself. My kids and I are going to bake cookies the whole week before Christmas and package them up and give the little bundles to cousins, aunts uncles etc. I like to make stuff. I am almost done making a small patchwork quilt for a friend and I will start a knitted shawl for another friend as soon as the quilt is done. Every year, I try to make ornaments to give out as gifts, too. Most of my family loves to see what I make each year. If you are not into making things, maybe you could do something I did while in college and had no money. Take some paper (you could use your computer) and print out your own gift certificates. Make up what they are good for. Say your mother hates cleaning the bathroom. Make one for her that is good for one bathroom cleaning done by you, and give an expiration date and all that. Tell friends and family that you don't want gifts, to donate to a charity the money they would spend on you. Do the same for them. Give out Christmas cards saying that you donated X amount of money to ABC Charity in thier name. You just have to get a little creative. If you don't like the commercialization of Christmas, don't go all humbug, just don't be commercial yourself and maybe it will catch on with your family and friends.

One of my friends annoys me so very greatly when it comes to Christmas; every year he makes the comment that "You know it's Christmas when the Coca-Cola ad is on TV," and that obviously stands for everything I hate about the festival (crass commercialism, despiritualisation etc.)

I still love Christmas itself though.

Christmas Gift Ideas Please

My girlfriend loves classic literature, fiction and historical fiction. One of her favorite authors is Isabel Allende. Can someone with similar tastes suggest another book or author?

Yes, I can! I like Isabel Allende and other South American and magical realism writers.

Try Like Water for Chocolate : A Novel in Monthly Installments with Recipes, Romances, and Home Remedies by Luara Esquivel!

It's a really great book :)

SillyWabbit, that was a great suggestion. So good, in fact, that I have to let you know that she's already read it. So, you're totally on track with her tastes. Would you suggest any other books by that author?

Also, have you read The Stories of Eva Luna by Allende? My g/f read it while she was living in the same city as me, and she would read the stories to me at night before we went to sleep. I thought the stories were great. There was almost always some crazy twist to them, and the characters were great.

Pura Vida!

Yeah, I have read Eva Luna but it was a bit of a come down after the so great and utterly wonderful House of Spirits

Hmmmm, what else can I suggest? How about Swift as desire? That's another one by Luara Esquivel! I actually haven't personally read it yet. It's on my book shelf waiting to be read. I read the first few pages and it seemed like it was going to be really great so maybe that one? Especially since she liked her other.

AH! I KNOW! I HAVE JUST the thing for her! Try Chocolate by Joanne Harris! I think she would like that one a lot! Or you could try Blackberry Wine by the same author.

If she likes South American authors and also historical fiction how about something by my fav Gabriel Garcia Marquez? I suggest Of Love and Other Demons by him. It's a lighter and more lyrical work by him. Or she could just jump right into his master work and read 100 years in solitude Although it's one of the greatest novels I have ever read, It's a pretty dark, intense and challenging read so I am not sure it's a good starting point for his writings.

Hope that helps :)

How about A Voice in the Wind by Francine Rivers. It's Historical Fiction. And one of my Favorite books.

She needs a good reading lamp or one of those cozy thermal blankets for her lap while she's reading. Or a hot chocolate mug--that'd do the trick.

Great gift ideas all around! You guys have outdone yourselves. I think she will definitely be receiving one of those lamps that you can clamp onto your bed. As for books, I may swing by a local store and see what I can find from your recommendations. I ordered a lot of stuff online last night, and I don't feel like spending anymore on shipping charges this season.

Even though, it probably would make me more popular around here if I bought you guys Christmas gifts, I'm afraid I'll have to decline. I have too many other bills right now, so I'll have to remain an average joe on the board.

Guess what, SillyWabbit. She has also read 100 Years of Solitude. You are totally in touch with her reading habits... and you've never met her! You must be... psychic! Just like that episode of South Park last week.
