OMG!! Lightning vs Flyers; Flames vs Sharks

I agree that hockey players seem the most down to earth, though I'm not sure why.

Maybe they just raise them right in Canada? But then those from other countries are pretty cool too. (nothing funnier than a drunk Russian).

We've had minor league hockey in my town for over 50 years and it's kinda neat that a lot of the players have retired and raised their families here. I'm amazed at how many of them became fireman when they hung up their skates. I'm sure it has something to do with the excitement and team comradary.

New Jersey's the one that shocked me. How 'bout you Ell? (and any others)
Pretty shocked. I always figured Brodeur would pull them through. He didn't play up to his usual brilliance. I also think the loss of Stevens really hurt them.

'Becca, RaVen, glad you support the minor league teams. Otherwise, there'd be no place to develop young players after Juniors and college. We don't have any minor league teams out here but lots of local Junior teams (most of the NHL draft picks come out of Junior A teams). Most of these young men are far from home and are billeted with families in the community and attend the local highschools. We've had quite a few in our highschool over the years.

BTW, we call 'minor hockey' what the little kids play, so I was kind of confused about what you were talking about at first. Both my sons played minor hockey from elementary school through high school. The older one still plays in a men's recreational league.

Don't know about Gretzky and Lemieux's kids playing hockey, though. Can you imagine the pressure with those names!!?

The Av's....my poor, poor Av's. Do you think their coach is safe? I wouldn't bet on it. You know what player loss I think hurt them the most? It's not Roy but Chris Drury. That boy had a knack for clutch goals and I curse the man that decided to get rid of him. I feel for Sakic too. That man's the class of the league and they wouldn't have got as far as they did without climbing on his back (and Forsberg's too of course)
Well, according the Pierre Lacroix, Tony Granato is safe. But I think the Avs are going to look very different next year. Do you think Forsberg will be back if there's a prolonged lockout/strike? He's had so many injuries the last couple seasons - it doesn't help with the crushing style he plays - I wonder if he's got more than a season or 2 left. I feel badly for Sakic, too. He's a classy guy. Canucks fans would love it if he came back here to play out his career. He grew up, played minor hockey in the Vancouver area and most of his family is still here.

RaVen, you're probably right about the dynasties. The Avs and Detroit may be the last of the great team dynasties. There surely won't be any in Canada. The smaller markets here just don't have the cash to keep players of winning teams together for long.

Anyone outside of Vancouver hear about the Brian Burke firing? Or as ownership said, they "chose not to renew his contract". Cute, huh? This is a GM who almost single-handedly rebuilt a dysfunctional team into a close-knit, winning (for the most part) play-off team; turned it from a money-losing franchise to profit-making; filled the arena with sellouts for the last season and a half, and they let him go? His only problem is that he's too honest and didn't get along with Stan McCammon (CEO).

Rambled on long enough . . .

Ell :)

Congratulations Ell,

I'm elated to see the Flames advance to the S.C.Final. :D

Now if the Lighning can just finish off the Flyers.

Yay for the Flames! I've a friend (via her weblog) who has been attending all the Flames home games...her joy has been quite infectious.

Tampa looked overwhelmed by Phillies size and strength - sp. in the 3rd and overtime. They were just being pounded - and with nothing being called, just couldn't fight through. Hope they can regroup!

I like to watch ice-hockey, and support my local team Newcastle Vipers (uk).
They arent in the top league over here, but they are in the next team down. the UK being so smal there arent many 'pro' teams and they all work 'normal' jobs as well.

If i ever get to visit america (again) or canada i will have to seek out some ice-hockey to watch!

sucks that detroit didn't win the stanley cup. it lowers the crime rate for some reason.

oh well, we're back to where we started.

I knew I didn't like you Bobby.

Just kidding, :D but you knew that.

Watching Detroit will be interesting over the next few years. I don't know who all they have under future contract but it's obvious they are getting a little long in the tooth.

Stevie Y is on his last legs and others like Hull, Shanny and Lidstrom are right behind him.Datsyuk & Zetterberg are promising but it's going to take more than them.

Their goalies are questionable too I would think. IMO, they should stick with Legace. He's solid in net and got the shaft with CuJo and the return of Hasek.

Will the Detroit fans continue to pay the big bucks at the gates when most of their stars are gone? Like I said, it should be interesting.

Good luck over there!

YAAAHOOO!

TB regrouped all right Ell. We should be in for a great final.

I'd love to be in Calgary for the next few weeks.

FLAMES in 7!

RaVeN

After tonights game I'll bet a few brooms were put back in their closets , huh Ell? I couldn't believe it when I read predictions of a sweep. TB's being there is no fluke and I thought it was the Flames turn for a wake up call tonight.

Should be an exciting game on saturday at the Sea of Red. Good Luck!

RaVeN

I get cable back this weekend, so I can finally watch the games! Woohoo! Sucks just having to keep up by reading the news.

If you do get stuck without cable this weekend, I think saturday's game will be shown on one of the major networks.

Take the time out from your moving chores and enjoy, you deserve it.

I plan to. I'll let my husband do the unpacking since I've done all the packing ;) I need a break!

Don't let him sucker you by "honey, where does this go?" every few minutes. Before you know it he'll have gotten on your nerves so much that you'll be doing the unpacking while he's watching the game.

It always worked for me anyway. :D

Yes, we've already been through that the past two weekends. Of course, if I let him unpack, he'll do such a poor job, that I'll just have to rearrange anyway. Men.

:D

Was that some game 6 or what? Did I mention Brad Richards & Martin St. Louis before? Oh, that's right...I did. :D

I'm still going with the Flames in game 7 monday night though. Since I won't be here monday, I'm confident enough to go ahead and congratulate Ell and the rest of Canada right now.

Your team has shown nothing but heart. Be proud!
