New Jersey's the one that shocked me. How 'bout you Ell? (and any others)
Pretty shocked. I always figured Brodeur would pull them through. He didn't play up to his usual brilliance. I also think the loss of Stevens really hurt them.
'Becca, RaVen, glad you support the minor league teams. Otherwise, there'd be no place to develop young players after Juniors and college. We don't have any minor league teams out here but lots of local Junior teams (most of the NHL draft picks come out of Junior A teams). Most of these young men are far from home and are billeted with families in the community and attend the local highschools. We've had quite a few in our highschool over the years.
BTW, we call 'minor hockey' what the little kids play, so I was kind of confused about what you were talking about at first. Both my sons played minor hockey from elementary school through high school. The older one still plays in a men's recreational league.
Don't know about Gretzky and Lemieux's kids playing hockey, though. Can you imagine the pressure with those names!!?
The Av's....my poor, poor Av's. Do you think their coach is safe? I wouldn't bet on it. You know what player loss I think hurt them the most? It's not Roy but Chris Drury. That boy had a knack for clutch goals and I curse the man that decided to get rid of him. I feel for Sakic too. That man's the class of the league and they wouldn't have got as far as they did without climbing on his back (and Forsberg's too of course)
Well, according the Pierre Lacroix, Tony Granato is safe. But I think the Avs are going to look very different next year. Do you think Forsberg will be back if there's a prolonged lockout/strike? He's had so many injuries the last couple seasons - it doesn't help with the crushing style he plays - I wonder if he's got more than a season or 2 left. I feel badly for Sakic, too. He's a classy guy. Canucks fans would love it if he came back here to play out his career. He grew up, played minor hockey in the Vancouver area and most of his family is still here.
RaVen, you're probably right about the dynasties. The Avs and Detroit may be the last of the great team dynasties. There surely won't be any in Canada. The smaller markets here just don't have the cash to keep players of winning teams together for long.
Anyone outside of Vancouver hear about the Brian Burke firing? Or as ownership said, they "chose not to renew his contract". Cute, huh? This is a GM who almost single-handedly rebuilt a dysfunctional team into a close-knit, winning (for the most part) play-off team; turned it from a money-losing franchise to profit-making; filled the arena with sellouts for the last season and a half, and they let him go? His only problem is that he's too honest and didn't get along with Stan McCammon (CEO).
Rambled on long enough . . .
